Approaching its 11th season in the Big Bash League , Brisbane Heat is one of the six teams to win the BBL title when they marched to a win 9 years back against Perth Scorchers . It remains their sole title so far in the first 10 seasons of BBL.
In the last season, they qualified for the playoffs being the 4 th team in the points table after the league stage. They eventually lost to Perth Scorchers in the Challenger and thus were out of the league just a step before the finals.
In 2016-17, Brisbane Heat had reached the semi-finals but crashed out against Sydney Sixers in the over-over eliminator after the match was tied at the end of 20 overs each.
Brisbane’s home venue is the Brisbane Fun88 Ground, popularly known as the Gabba, and it boasts of some of the largest crowds in the BBL with a seating capacity of about 42000.
They have a history of some of the best overseas recruits with AB de Villiers, one of the most sought-after T20 players in the world, being a part of the franchise since BBL|9. Overseas player, Brendon McCullum had led them from 2016 to 2018 with moderate success.
The Heat have a new captain this season in the form of Jimmy Pierson who has taken over from Chris Lynn who captained the most number of matches. They also have a new coach Wade Seccombe who replaced Darren Lehmann. Lehmann had been their head coach in the only season they emerged as winners in the Big Bash League (2012-13). Let’s see what coach Wade Seccombe brings to the table.
Brisbane Heat will start BBL|11 with the second match of the season against Sydney Thunder at Canberra on 6 th December 2021. The Heat have the best record against Sydney Thunder with 71% wins in 14 encounters so far in BBL. They should feel confident to win the first game against the Thunder.

While Brisbane Heat enjoy the best winning rate against Sydney Thunders, another franchise from Sydney – Sydney Sixers – has proven to be their headache over the years in BBL. The Heat have the worst record against the Sixers with just 3 wins in 14 games which amount to a 21% winning rate.
The Heat’s first match against the Sixers in this BBL on 29 th December will be their last match of the year 2021.
As far as the remaining teams are concerned, the Heat need major improvements in the head to head records. They have a winning percentage in the thirties against the Hurricanes and Renegades whereas it’s in the forties against Scorchers and Strikers. Needless to say, the Heat needs major performance improvements this year to better their record of 42% win rate in the BBL history.

Brisbane’s success formula in the past has been built on all-rounders who have lent stability to the side. Ben Cutting, Daniel Christian were massive players for them in the title-winning season. In the last season as well, despite finishing fourth after the league stage, they went on to reach the finals but lost to Sydney Sixers by 49 Runs.
This season the team will be led by their new captain and wicketkeeper Jimmy Pierson while the previous captain Chris Lynn will focus on performing with the bat.
The three foreign players in the squad are Ben Ducket, Tob Abell from England and Mujeeb us Rahman from Afghanistan. All these players will be key to Brisbane Heat’s success.
Brisbane Heat have let go of away players such as Tom Banton, Lewis Gregory, Dan Lawrence and Joe Denly and brought in Tob Abell, Ben Ducket.
They have also added Michael Neser after 10 seasons with Adelaide Strikers. The heat did not renew the contracts for Jack Wildermuth, Xavier Barlett and Marnus Labuschagne.
The absence of Labuschagne is due to the fact that he will be unavailable due to the upcoming Ashes series. That means the ex-captain Chris Lynn would have to take more responsibility with the bat. The newly appointed captain should play the role of a finisher in the team apart from being the designated wicket-keeper.
Apart from the presence of some experienced batters such as Labuschagne, Denly, Burns the team looks settled and have some exciting players in the squad to make up for the absentees.
