Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) next match is on Tuesday 29 March 2022 at 19:30 IST, against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at MCA Stadium, Pune. It’s the fifth match of the IPL 2022.
There is a new format in place for this Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with 10 teams divided into two groups – Group A and Group B. 10 participant teams include SRH and 7 other regular franchises, and two newly introduced teams. SRH is part of Group B, along with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT) and Punjab Kings (PBKS).
Among SRH’s upcoming matches are two each against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and the fellow group members – CSK, RCB, GT and PBKS. They will play one game against each of the teams from Group A – Mumbai Indians (MI), Delhi Capitals (DC), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
Supporters of SRH must be waiting to see their team playing against their rivals like KKR and MI. Who would forget SRH’s two playoff encounters with KKR in 2017 – the game SRH lost after it was reduced to 5-overs – and in 2018 which SRH won thanks to Rashid Khan’s cameo (10-balls 34).
SRH will play KKR twice, first on 15 April and then on 14 May. SRH fans will have to wait a bit longer for their only encounter with MI, as it’s on 17 May.
Let’s take a look at SRH matches and their performances in the last three seasons of the IPL. Between 2019 and 2021, SRH played 45 matches, out of which they won 17, and lost 28. It leads to an overall success ratio of just 37.14%.
Though, it is a decline of around 8% if we compare it with the success ratio of just 2019 and 2020. SRH qualified for playoffs in IPL 2019 and IPL 2020, with 3rd and 4th position respectively, but they had a disastrous performance in the 2021 edition.
SRH have the worst record against teams such as CSK, KKR and MI who have most of the IPL trophies

Sunrisers Hyderabad played all their 2019 games in India. In 2019, SRH played matches in the UAE, as the entire IPL tournament was hosted by the UAE due to the COVID-19 outbreak in India.
In 2021, the IPL was originally hosted in India, it was halted midway due to the worsening pandemic situations in India before resuming it in the UAE. SRH failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last season’s first time after 2015.
SRH played 15 IPL matches in 2019. It included 14 group-stage games and an Eliminator match. They won 6 matches and lost 8 in the group stage, but failed to overcome the Elimination. With a 40% winning percentage, SRH finished IPL 2019 at fourth place.
They had their share of highs and lows. SRH scored 200 plus thrice – against RR, RCB and PBKS. They also got all out for under 100 in a match against MI, and lost the second one against MI too after a tie. Sunrisers Hyderabad also posted their highest-ever total of 231 runs playing against RCB, as the openers David Warner-Jonny Bairstow thrashed RCB bowlers mercilessly.
Bairstow scored 114 off 56, while Warner hit an unbeaten century from 55 balls. They won the match by a huge margin of 118 runs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad did a better job in IPL 2020. With 7 wins and 7 losses, they got the third place to enter the playoffs. Their key matches include a 10-wickets win against MI and a 7-runs win against CSK. The game against CSK went all the way till the last over.
The Orange Army made the IPL debut in 2013 when the Deccan Chargers’ contract was terminated.

SRH made 164 batting first, thanks to Priyam Garg (51 off 26). CSK needed 28 runs in the last over when Dhoni was still around, but SRH ended positively even after conceding 20 off the last over. In the first Eliminator, Jason Holder’s 3 wickets helped restrict RCB at 131 in the first Eliminator.
He also scored 24 off 20 balls down the order to help his captain Kane Williamson (50 off 44) finish the match to secure the place in the second Eliminator. Eventually, SRH lost to DC and failed to reach the final of IPL 2020.
By the time IPL was shifted to the UAE in the previous season, SRH had already lost 6 out of their 7 games. They had lost the first two games to KKR and RCB by narrow margins of 10 and 6 runs respectively. Against MI in the next match again too, they lost by just 13 runs.
It becomes very difficult for any team to rejuvenate from such a situation, and SRH couldn’t do any better in the UAE as well. In the UAE, they won only two games, against RR and RCB. In the match against RCB, SRH made 141 runs thanks to Jason Roy’s meticulous 44 runs. Though Rashid Khan conceded 39 runs in his four overs, some tight spells from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul and Umran Malik got SRH the victory just by four runs.
As per Indian Premier League 2022 SRH’s schedule, they have 14 matches at the group stage. Their inaugural match is on 29 March at 19:30 IST at MCA Stadium, Pune. During the first half of the contest, SRH will participate in 6 games, and the remaining 8 games are scheduled between 23 April and 22 May.
Kane Williamson led SRH to remain out of action for the first 3 days of the IPL 2022. They have their opening fixture on 29 March, against Rajasthan Royals at 19:30 IST at Pune’s MCA Stadium. SRH will play their last group stage match against PBKS at 19:30 IST at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
SRH’s schedule shows they have 1 match in March, 7 matches in April, and the remaining 6 matches in May. Like all teams, Sunrisers Hyderabad also play four games to play at Wankhede Stadium, which are against GT, RCB, MI and PBKS. The Kings will play 4 games at DY Patil Stadium, which are against LSG, CSK, GT and PBKS.
At Brabourne Stadium Mumbai, SRH will play 3 games against KKR, RCB and DC, and at Pune’s MCA Stadium, they have matches against teams like RR, CSK, and KKR.
SRH fans and followers eagerly await the games against rivals KRK, CSK and MI. They will face KKR twice, on 15 April and on 14 May. Their two games against CSK are scheduled for 9 April and 01 May. And, their only encounter against MI is later on 17 May at 19:30 IST, at MI’s bastion – Wankhede Stadium.
Founded in 2012, Hyderabad-based franchises have done well against some of the oldest clubs. SRH have better success rates against teams like PBKS (66.67%), RCB (57.89%), DC (55%) and RR (53.33%). SRH look quite comfortable playing against PBKS. The Sunrisers played 18 games against PBKS and won 12 and lost just 6 games. Apparently, against RR, DC and RCB teams, they have won more than they lost.
SRH won their maiden IPL title in the IPL 2016 after defeating RCB in the final.

SRH lost double the number of matches they won against KKR, resulting in a winning percentage of just 33.33%. Sunrisers Hyderabad hold slightly weak records against MI, but they aren’t almost neck in neck. They played 18 games against MI, won 8 and lost 10 games.

That’s one season SRH would want to erase from history, as they won just 3 games out of the 14 matches they played. With that, SRH finished at the bottom of the points table of IPL 2021.
It’s a tough call. Even if we leave aside the stats of 2021, SRH have the potential to perform consistently and win matches against some of the biggest teams and reach the playoffs. But, meeting CSK or MI in the playoffs could be fatal.
