Rajasthan Royals (RR) next match is scheduled for Tuesday 29 March 2022 at 19:30 IST, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at MCA Stadium, Pune.
This game is the fifth match in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League. This season, we will see the IPL tournament played under a new format. In IPL 2022, there are 10 teams divided into two groups – Group A and Group B. Out of 10 participant teams, 8 belong to the regular franchises, while two franchises – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants – are newly added. RR is part of Group A, along with Mumbai Indians (MI), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
In this tournament, RR will play two games each against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and the fellow group members MI, KKR, DC and LSG. They will play one game against each of the teams from Group B – Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT).
The followers of the Jaipur based franchise will be waiting to see their side clashing against CSK, DC and SRH. RR will encounter CSK on 20 May at 19:30 IST. Their encounters with DC are on 22 April and 11 May – both games will begin at 19:30 IST.
Here is a review of RR matches and their overall results in the last three IPL seasons. Since 2019, RR played 42 matches, out of which they won 16, and lost 25. Their overall success ratio between 2019 and 2021 is 38.09%, which also indicates they failed to qualify for the Playoffs in any of the previous 3 seasons. In 2019, they won 5 games and finished 7th, while in 2020 they remained at the bottom of the points table with 6 wins. In 2021 again they ended up in 7th place with 5 wins.
RR had defeated CSK in the final of the inaugral IPL season in 2008.

RR’s 2019 IPL games were based in India, but in 2020 all the IPL matches were hosted in the UAE due to the first wave of COVID-19. In IPL 2021, RR played their first few matches in India, but then due to the worsening pandemic situation, the remaining IPL tournament was moved to the UAE.
Though everyone expected a better show from RR in IPL 2019, especially after a Playoff finish in the previous season, RR finished 7th with 5 wins, 8 losses and 1 game ended with no results.
They had a good batting line-up comprising Sanju Samson, Steve Smith, Jos Buttler and the top-scorer Ajinkya Rahane (393 runs). Though, Smith joined the squad and led the side 9th match onwards after serving his 12-month ban. The lack of world-class bowlers was one of the main causes of their poor results.
Though, all-rounder and leg-breaker Shreyas Gopal was good for his 20 wickets from 14 matches. RR shone in their away win against KKR in the group stage as they successfully chased down the target of 176 with 3 wickets and 4 balls remaining. Rahane (34 runs) and Samson’s (22 runs) opening stand of 53 runs in 5.2 overs, Riyan Parag’s 47 off 31 in the middle and Jofra Archer’s cameo of 12-balls 27 contributed to RR’s victory.
In 2020, they did slightly better compared to 2019 in terms of the number of wins – 6 – but still remained at the bottom of the points table. Interestingly, the bottom-three teams shared the same points – 12, and the third and fourth-ranked teams were just two points ahead of these teams.
Rajasthan Royals managed to finish 7th in the points table of the last season.

In the match against PBKS, RR created an IPL record of the highest total chase in IPL history. PBKS had put up 223 runs on the board batting first. The Royals were 1 down in the third over, but Smith’s (50 runs off 27 balls) quick half-century.
Then followed Samson’s magical innings of 85 runs from just 42 deliveries, which included 7 sixes. Rahul Tewatia (53 off 31) too joined the bandwagon. Jofra Archer’s 2 sixes in the penultimate over, followed by Tewatia’s another one, ensured the victory with 3 balls remaining.
IPL 2021 didn’t prove any better for RR. They again lingered at 7th place in the points table after managing to win just 5 out of 14 group stage games.
Among the group-stage matches, The Royals were especially remarkable in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, as they put up 220 runs batting first. The credit goes to Buttler’s 124 runs off just 64 deliveries. His centurion innings included 8 sixes and 11 fours. Mustafizur Rahman and Chris Morris took 3 wickets each as RR won the game by 55 runs.
In the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League, RR’s schedule shows 14 matches at the group stage. They will start their campaign with the match against SRH on 29 March at 19:30 IST at MCA Stadium, Pune.
RR will play 7 games in the first half of the tournament, and their remaining 7 games are scheduled between 26 April to 20 May. Promising Sanju Samson-led RR will play their last group stage match against Chennai Super Kings at Brabourne Stadium at 19:30 IST.
We can see the majority of RR matches in April. They have just 1 game in March, 8 games in April, and the last 5 matches in May.
Like other IPL teams, Rajasthan Royals also have four games to play at Wankhede Stadium, where they will meet KKR, PBKS, RCB and LSG. The Royals will play 4 games at DY Patil Stadium, which are against MI (twice), GT and DC.
At Brabourne Stadium Mumbai, RR will face KKR, LSG and CSK, and they have matches against teams like SRH, DC and RCB at Pune’s MCA Stadium.
Watch out for the Royals’ matches against their key rivals like CSK, DC and SRH. While RR’s first match is against SRH, they will clash with DC twice – on 22 April and 11 May. Both games will begin at 19:30 IST. RR will face CSK very late in the tournament – on 20 May at 19:30 IST.
The first IPL champions, RR have the best success ratio against Punjab Kings. Over the years, the two sides played 23 games, out of which RR won 13 games with a 56.52% win-loss ratio. Against Delhi Capitals, they are neck in neck. RR encountered DC 24 times since the first IPL season, and both sides won 12 games. RR played 15 games against SRH starting IPL 2013, out of which they won 7, lost 8 games.
Rajasthan Royals have reached knockout stage only four times in 14 seasons.

The Royals are marginally behind Mumbai Indians. RR won 11 encounters and 13 games went against them, which is absolutely commendable considering they performed against the most successful team. The Royals carry a similar win-loss percentage against two-time IPL winners KKR – 11 wins and 13 losses from 24 games.
They are not too far behind RCB as well. Out of their 24 encounters, RR won 10 and lost 12, while two matches were abandoned. CSK have been their toughest opponent. The two sides clashed in 25 IPL games, out of which RR won 10 games, but lost 15 – resulting in a 40% winning percentage.
