Hobart Hurricanes

Hobart Hurricanes are based out of Tasmania and a franchise that exists since the inception of the Big Bash League in 2011.

The Hurricanes play their home games in the Bellerive Oval, also commonly known as Blundstone Arena in Hobart, Tasmania. Purple is their team colour.

Despite making it to the playoffs for 5 of the first 10 seasons, the Hurricanes are yet to win the Big Bash League title.

Hobart Hurricanes have consistently made the playoffs but do not have a trophy yet in the BBL.

They have been runner-ups twice – in BBL|3 when they lost to Perth Scorchers by 39 runs and then in BBL|7 when they lost to Adelaide Strikers by 25 runs. They have made it to the playoffs in 3 of the last 4 seasons of BBL but the title still eludes them.

Hobart Hurricanes have played 106 BBL matches in the first 10 seasons winning almost half of them – 51 wins, 53 losses and 2 washouts. In the recent 10 matches, they have won 4 and have lost 5 matches.

Xavier Doherty was their captain in the very first season of BBL. They finished the inaugural season as semi-finalists but did not qualify the following year before being finalists in the year after that.

Interestingly, the Hurricanes were the very first Big Bash League franchise with a team song of their own. It was written by Tim Paine who was their captain from 2013 to 2017.

Always a batting side, Hobart held the record for the highest score in the history of the Big Bash League – a 223/8 against Melbourne Renegades in 2017 which was broken by Sydney Thunder in the last season.

They aren’t quite a popular franchise, though, as reflected from the crowd turnout. Their inability to clinch the title may have contributed to that. Hobart Hurricanes, led by Matthew Wade, would be hoping for their maiden title in the upcoming BBL|11.

The Hobart Hurricanes will start BBL|11 with the 4 ^th match of this season to be played against Sydney Sixers at Aurora Stadium, Launceston on 8 ^th December 2021. Their next game is against the Sixers again but at the away venue in Sydney Fun88 Ground.

The Hurricanes wouldn’t mind playing against the Sixers in their first encounter. They have a 57% win percentage against Sydney Sixers with 8 wins and 5 losses in 14 games played so far with 1 match ending in a washout.

The Hurricanes play their next two games against Perth Scorchers – home and away – on 14 ^th and 20 ^th December respectively. The Hurricanes would have to be at their absolute best against Scorchers with just 40% win record in 15 matches – 6 wins and 9 losses.

After these matches, by the end of 2021, they play Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades , Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat .

The Hurricanes have the worst record against the Stars and Strikers with winning percentages of just 33% and 38% respectively. Against the Renegades as well, they have lost more than they have won (7 losses and 6 wins).

Brisbane Heat is a different situation altogether as the Hurricanes have the best record against them with a 61% winning percentage – 11 wins and 7 losses.

The Hurricanes play back to back home and away matches against Sydney Thunder on 10 ^th and 13 ^th January 2022. They have a very good record against the Thunder with 60% wins – 9 wins and 6 losses in 15 games.

Apart from Thunder, Sixers and Heat, the Hurricanes have a forgettable record against the rest which is something they must improve to have some chance of getting close to the first championship win in the BBL|11.

The Hobart Hurricanes team haven’t been the most successful over the years, but if there’s one trait that’s defined them in these years, it’s their batting. The Hurricanes have produced some exceptional players in the last decade in Australia. Their key Australian players include George Bailey, Tim Paine (both of whom went on to captain the national team), D’Arcy Short, Matthew Wade and Dan Christian.

They have also had some impressive overseas talent with the most notable one being England pace bowler, Jofra Archer. The fast bowler gained cult status with his stint in the franchise that drove international recognition and eventually a place in the England national team. Other famous foreign players over the years include Stuart Broad, Kumar Sangakkara, Daren Sammy, Shoaib Malik and Tim Bresnan.

BBL|10 was a forgettable season for the Hurricanes. They finished 6th on the points table and thus could not reach the playoffs. They were tied with Adelaide Strikers at the 5th place but had an inferior NRR.

There has not been many changes to the Hurricanes team for this season. Although they have added a few away players to the team in the form of Harry Brook and Jordan Thompson from England and leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane from Nepal. The left arm seamer James Faulkner has been released and has been replaced by the like for like replacement in the form of Joel Paris who has played 2 ODIs for Australia.

The Hurricanes have a good many power hitters in the team with Tim David and Captain Matthew Wade from Australia and new power hitting allrounder recruited in terms of Harry Brook and Jordan Thompson. Thompson has also being looked at as a finisher for the Hurricanes. Peter Handscomb is the ideal anchor in the team who would bring in all of his international experience to the fore.

Needless to say D’Arcy Short holds the key to the success of this team. He has crossed the 50-run mark 20 times in the 57 innings so far in the BBL converting 2 of those into century. He would like to add some more that tally in BBL|11.

Hobart Hurricanes Players

The Hobart Hurricanes players assembled for the 2020 edition of the Big Bash League has diverse skill sets with a key focus on batting potential in the new recruits. While they have stocked up on all-rounders, it is their batsmen and the season they have that will determine Hobart’s fortunes.

D’Arcy Short – A bludgeoning opening batter and a left-arm wrist spinner, D’Arcy Short is an all-rounder like no other in the league because of his unique bowling style. Coupled with his belligerent hitting, Short is a fantastic T20 player and an important member of the Hobart Hurricanes squad. While he may not contribute four overs every game, Short can be banked upon on slower wickets to do the job and even break a few partnerships. He has scored 2109 runs in 57 innings at an average of 40.56and a strike rate of close to 140 with 2 centuries and 18 fifties.

Matthew Wade – Captain, wicketkeeper and power hitter Matthew Wade is one of the key components of this team. As was seen in the recently concluded T20 World Cup semi-finals, he can change gears effortlessly. He has the second highest BBL runs in the current squad – 1831 runs in 64 innings at an average of 3.29 and a strike rate of above 140. He has a century and 13 half-centuries to his name.

Though Riley Meredith has the most wickets playing for hurricanes – 43 wickets in 34 innings – Scott Boland has the most BBL wickets in this Hurricanes’s squad and will be the key bowler in BBL|11. Boland has 68 wickets in 55 matches at an average of 24.72 and an economy of 8.31.

Hobart Hurricanes WBBL

The Tasmanian franchise Hobart Hurricanes Women has been a part of the WBBL since the first season in 2015/16. Despite reaching the semi-finals in the first two seasons of the WBBL they couldn’t get the title. They lost to Sydney Sixers Women in both semi-finals.

Since then, the Hurricanes Women’s team has stayed at the bottom of the table consistently. They were the last ranked team in 3 of the last 4 seasons of WBBL.

The Hurricanes Women have one of the worst records in BBL with a winning percentage of close to 30% so far in the WBBL. Captain Rachel Priest needs to inspire this team to perform better in the upcoming seasons.
