They have been part of this league since 2011-12 which was the inaugural edition of BBL . Sydney Showground Stadium which is famous for conducting domestic cricket matches in Sydney Olympic Park is the home ground of this team and has a capacity of 22,000.

They have won only 3 games out of a total of 14 games against this dominant opponent. They would try to change fortunes in their favour by taking advantage of home conditions to start BBL on a good note.

After facing their arch-rivals, they will play their next 2 back-to-back away and then a home game against Melbourne Stars. They will try to gain momentum from here as they have a decent record against Melbourne Stars with a win percentage of 46.67% with 7 wins in 15 matches so far.

The team will play against Brisbane Heat in an away match followed by a match against the defending champions Sydney Sixers in the derby. The Thunders have won just 7 out of 19 matches against the Sixers.

Sydney Thunder and predictions don’t go hand in hand with each other. They were at the bottom of the points table in the first four seasons. Out of the blue, they went on to clinch their first BBL title in the fifth season by beating Melbourne Stars.

What followed then was the bottom place again in the next two seasons. They found their mojo in BBL9 & BBL10 by qualifying for Challenger and Knockout rounds respectively. Sydney Thunder are hoping to carry their form in their quest to win their second BBL trophy this season.

Sydney Thunder surprised everyone by delisting their most successful captain Callum Ferguson (Winning percentage: 53.22%). Thunder selected Usman Khwaja to lead this season. But his inclusion in the Ashes squad opened the door for Chris Green to take the baton.

Golden Bat winner Alex Hales’ return for the consecutive season will fancy head coach Trevor Bayliss to draw the plans for a successful season. Sam Whiteman, Jason Sangha, and Matthew Gikes will look forward to company Hales in the top-order.

Two more Englishmen – Sam Billings and Saqib Mahmood are set to boost the Sydney Thunder roster. Billing will not only keep the gloves but also strengthen the middle-order for Thunder. Saqib Mahmood looks like an ideal replacement for Kiwi pacer Adam Milne. However, it’s Alex Ross on which Thunder will have their eyes glued on. ‘The Sweepologist’ is most likely to play all the games this season.

Oliver Davies will miss the first few games until he recovers from the broken thumb. Experienced Daniel Sams and Ben Cutting will reprise their roles of all-rounders. Both played a crucial role for Thunder last season by scoring 480 runs collectively in 21 innings at an average of 40. Cutting has 153 sixes in 171 games so far.

Ross and Cutting could be the finishers Thunder needed in the last few seasons. Arjun Nair has been added in place of injured Brendan Doggett. Nair who lost his main contract will add spin options to the bowling unit. Tanveer Sangha will be the leader of the pack after a breakout season last year.

Overall Thunder have good bowling depth this season. Nathan McAndrew and Chris Tremain will be on the bench due to injuries causing the Thunder to lose their key players.

Alex Hales – It was a hail of a ride for Hales to join the Thunder camp season. The destructive opener was stuck in controversy after his 12-year-old image made rounds on social media. But after an apology, Hales was added to the roster. The Nottinghamshire batter scored 543 runs including a century in the last season at a strike rate of 161.60. So far more than 1000 runs in contribution from the Thunder opener make him the player to look out for this season.

Tanveer Sangha – Sangha caught the eyes of the Fun88 Australia selectors after claiming 21 wickets in 15 matches at an economy of 8.08. The 20-year-old was awarded a spot in Australia’s T20I team for the New Zealand tour. Sangha has the opportunity to embrace the breakout summer and to improve his chances of getting picked for T20Is.

Ben Cutting – What if we say only Chris Lynn and Glenn Maxwell have more sixes than Ben Cutting in the history of Big Bash? Yes, you heard that right. 153 sixes in 181 matches make Cutting more of a finisher. Cutting kills it when it comes to playing pace. His strike rate against the pace is 170.99. But he needs improvement in facing spinners. Cutting scored 180 runs last season at a strike rate of 156.42. The handy-bowler also picked 4 wickets at an economy of 7.65.

The defending champions Sydney Thunder Women are one of the two teams are playing out for Sydney. They have been part of this league since its inaugural season which they ended up winning. Currently, they have 2 titles in 6 years under the captaincy of Alex Blackwell and Rachael Haynes. The second title came in the last WBBL season defeating Melbourne Stars by 7 wickets.

They currently have Indian spinner Deepti Sharma and the charismatic opener Smriti Mandhana from India in their squad after Harmanpreet Kaur last played for them back in 2018.

Heather Knight has led the batting order of the team last season scoring 446 runs in 16 matches at an average of 40.54 to be the 4th highest run-scorer of the last season. The Thunder Women’s team has a well-balanced squad that must be looking forward to defending the title this season.
