West Indies

West Indies, also colloquially knowns as Windies, has a long and strong history in fun88. The first West Indies fun88 team was formed in 1880, and they travelled and played matches in United States of America and Canada. In 1890, they hosted the English fun88 team, and representative sides of West Indies played various matches against the visitors.

West Indies Fun88 Board joined ICC in 1926, and in 1928 they became the fourth team after Australia, England and South Africa to acquire the Test Status. They played both, their first-ever Test and One Day International match against an English side in 1928 and 1973, respectively. In 2006 they played their first T20I match. They won the first two editions of ICC Fun88 World Cup, in 1975 and 1979, while they remained runners-up in 1983, losing to India in the finals. They grabbed the ICC Champions Trophy in 2004 and won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2012. The world witnessed some of the greatest cricketers from the West Indies like Sir Garfield Sobers, Clive Lloyd, Brian Lara, and Sir Viv Richards.

Currently, West Indies cricket team ranks 8 th in the Tests, 9 th in the ODIs and 10 th in T20Is. To date, Windies have played 550 Tests, won 175, lost 199, and drew 175. Their overall win-loss ratio in Tests is 0.88%, and they have a better win-loss ratio against teams like Bangladesh (2.5 %), India (1.36 %) and England (1.14 %). They won most of the matches against the English side. In 160 Tests against England, they won 58 matches. Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka remain their toughest opponents. In One Day Internationals, Windies played 792 matches, won 401, lost 381, tied 10, while In T20Is, Windies played 121 matches, won 54, lost 64, tied 3.

West Indies Fun88 Team

The home season for West Indies generally begins in February or March, when they host various national teams to play 2-3 Tests, 3 to 5 ODIs, and 2-3 T20Is. They start travelling in September till February or March and play away matches which usually includes 2 Tests, 3-5 ODIs and 3 T20Is.

In January and February, West Indies will play an away series in Bangladesh, where they will play 3 ODIs and a couple of Tests. West Indies fun88 team will then host Sri Lanka during February and March 2021, and play 2 Tests, 3 ODIs and 3 Twenty-20 matches. In June, they will play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is at home against Australian fun88 team, while in July they would host Pakistan and play 3 Tests and 3 T20Is games. In November, they will travel to India for ICC World Cup Twenty-20.

The year 2022 will begin with another home series against Ireland, as they have 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is scheduled in January. Later the same month, they will travel to India to play 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. Between February to August 2022, West Indies fun88 team will host England (for 2 Tests, 3 T20Is), Bangladesh (for 2 Tests, 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is) and India (for 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is). In September 2022, they will visit South Africa for 2 Tests and 3 T20Is, and in October they will travel to Sri Lanka and play 2 Tests there. During November and December, they will travel to Australia, for 2 Tests, and New Zealand for 3 ODIs.

In January 2023, they will play 3 ODIs against Afghanistan in India, followed by 3 ODIs in and against Bangladesh.

New Zealand returned from New Zealand in December 2020 after playing 3 T20Is which they lost 0-2, and 2 Tests, which they lost 0-2. Currently, West Indies are on Bangladesh tour, where they are to play 3 One Day International matches and 2 Test matches. The ODI matches are scheduled on 20, 22 and 25 January. The Test series will begin from 3 February, while the concluding Test will start on 11 February in Dhaka. The first two ODIs and the second Test match are to be played at Sher e Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka. The venue for the final ODI and the first Test match is Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.

Since 1999 when the two sides clashed first for a One Day International match, they played 38 ODIs, from which West Indies won 21 times, and lost 15 matches while 2 ODIs ended in no-results. In the last five encounters, West Indies lost all the five ODIs against Bangladesh. Alzarri Joseph is the player to watch for in ODIs. He grabbed 24 wickets in the last 10 ODIs. Sunil Ambris, the new opener for Windies can be dangerous. In just 13 ODI, he scored a century and two half-centuries, with 148 as his highest score.

Both the sides played 16 Tests against each other to date, out of which West Indies won 10 Tests, lost only 4. In the last five Test encounters though, West Indies won 3 Tests and lost 2. John Campbell (415 runs in last 10 Tests matches) and Jermaine Blackwood (465 Tests in the last 6 Tests with an average of 42.27) are the key batsmen for Windies Test team. Kemar Roach (33 wickets in 9 Tests) and Shannon Gabriel (28 wickets in 9 Tests) are the strike bowlers.

West Indies fun88 players – History of West Indies greats

The formidable side of West Indies ruled the fun88 world since the mid-1970s till early 1990s. Some of the greatest West Indies fun88 players are – Sir Garfield Sobers, Lance Gibbs, Gordon Greenidge, George Headley, Malcolm Marshall, Clive Lloyd, Michael Holding, Sir Andy Roberts, the three Ws as they call (Sir Frank Worrell, Sir Clyde Walcott, Sir Everton Weekes), Sir Curtly Ambrose, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Courtney Walsh, Joel Garner and Sir Viv Richards.

Sir Curtly Ambrose, along with Courtney Walsh formed West Indies fun88 team’s ruthless bowling attack in the late ’80s and most of the 1990s. Walsh was the first Test bowler to take 500 wickets in 2000, while Ambrose took 405 wickets in 98 matches at an astounding average of 20.99. Among Windies bowlers with 50 or more Test wickets, Malcolm Marshall has the best bowling average of 20.94, with 376 wickets in 81 Tests.

One of the greatest all-rounders among West Indies fun88 players – Sir Garry Sobers scored 8032 runs and took 235 wickets in 93 Tests. His 365 runs in a Test in 1958, a record which was broken no sooner than 1994 by Brian Lara (375 runs). Lara is considered as one of the greatest batsmen that have every played fun88, with 11912 Test runs (the most by a Windies batsman), and 34 Test centuries (again, the most by a West Indies cricketer). He also broke his record and surpassed Matthew Hayden Hayden’s 380 runs, to become the highest individual scorer in an innings ever.

The best and the most revered West Indies cricketer is undoubtedly Sir Vivian Richards. The legendary batsman, Sir Viv, has scored 8540 Test runs, including 26 centuries. He also scored 6721 runs in ODIs. The revolutionary cricketer had stunned the world with his attacking game style and powerful hook shots, which was rare during the pre-T20 era.

West Indies Test Team

Jason Holder, the regular Test captain for West Indies Test side hasn’t travelled to Bangladesh with his teammates due to Covid-19 related concerns or personal fears as per Fun88 West Indies (CWI). Other players to miss the tour are Kieron Pollard, Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Sheldon Cottrell, Evin Lewis, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran.

Kraigg Brathwaite is the new captain for the Windies Test side, and he would open the innings along with John Campbell. Right-hand batsman Joshua Da Silva will keep the wicket and take charge of the middle-order along with Jermaine Blackwood. Shayne Moseley may get the opportunity to debut. Pacers Kemar Roach (33 wickets in the last 9 matches) and Shannon Gabriel (28 wickets in the last 9 matches) would lead the bowling unit along with Alzarri Joseph. Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers fit as all-rounders.

West Indies ODI Team

Jason Mohammed will lead the ODI team of West Indies in the absence of Kieron Pollard and Jason Holder. Sunil Ambris may open the innings with newbie Kjorn Ottley. Ambris has scored 447 runs in his 12 ODI innings since his debut, which includes 2 half-centuries and 1 century. Andre McCarthy and Rovman Powell will bat in the middle. They also have Raymon Reifer, Kyle Mayers and Raymon Reifer as all-rounders. Alzarri Joseph will lead the bowling unit, and to support him, they have Keon Harding, Chemar Holder and Akeal Hosein. Joseph has taken 24 wickets in the last 10 ODIs.

West Indies T20I Team

Kieron Pollard leads the West Indies T20, fun88 team. They have a long batting line-up, and some of the finest bowlers and all-rounders, most suitable for the T20 format. Andre Fletcher and Brandon King open the innings in T20I games. Shimron Hetmyer comes at number 3, followed by Kyle Mayers and wicket-keeper Nicholas Pooran at number 4 and 5. The skipper and the power-hitter Pollard bats at number 6, and Rovman Powell comes at 7. Pacers Keemo Paul, Oshane Thomas Jason Holder and Sheldon Cottrell form the daunting bowling unit along with the left-arm orthodox spinner Fabian Allen.

West Indies Vs England

The journey of West Indies fun88 began against England in 1928, with the Test match played on 23 Jun 1928. Since then, the two sides faced each other on 280 occasions across all the formats of the game, out of which, West Indies won 113 matches, and lost 110. It includes 160 Test encounters with England, from which Windies won 58 Tests, lost 51 and drew 51. The two sides clashed in 102 One Day International matches, of which West Indies won 44 matches, lost 52 and 6 matches were abandoned. In the shortest format of the game, West Indies played 18 T20Is against England, won 11 and lost 7.

In 2004, Brian Lara broke is his own record and scored 400 not out against visitors England in the fourth Test match of the series, as Windies put up 751 runs on the board. Windies could not convert it into a victory, but the Test shall always be remembered for Lara’s marathon innings which lasted 13 nearly hours. 1976 Test series and its final match between these two teams at the Oval shall always be remembered for Michael Holding’s dominance (career-best match figures 14 for 149). Also, Windies got their second World Cup trophy in 1979 against England after scoring 286 and bowling out England for 194. The player of the match Viv Richards scored 138 runs at a strike rate of 87.90, that included with 11 fours and 3 sixes.

West Indies Vs Australia

West Indies played their first Test match against Australia in 1930. Since then, they played 116 Tests, out of which Windies won 32, lost 58, tied 1 Test match, and drew 25. Starting 1975 when they played their first ODI game for the ICC Prudential World Cup, to date they played 140 ODIs, from which Windies won 60, lost 74, tied 3 and 3 matches were abandoned. The two teams clashed in only T20Is so far, and Windies won 6, lost 5 games to Australia.

The final of the first-ever ICC World cup was played between West Indies and Australia on 21 June 1975. Clive Lloyd, the skipper, scored a ton – 102 off just 85 balls, to take the team’s total to 291 runs in 60 overs,  and  Keith Boyce’s 4 wickets ensured the title win by the margin of 17 runs.

In 1960-61, West Indies toured Australia to play 5 Tests. Though Australia won the series by 2-1-1, the world witnessed the first-ever Tie in a Test match. Garry Sobers scored 132 runs in the first innings, as Windies put up 453 runs on the board. Australia needed 233 to win the match. A couple of run-outs towards the end produced the most unbelievable tie. West Indies produced their best game in 2003 when the defeated Australia at home in the 4 th Test match, by chasing down the record 418 runs, thanks to centuries from Ramnaresh Sarwan (105 runs) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (104 runs) and a half-century from Lara (60 runs). Omari Banks  (47 runs) and Vasbert Drakes (27 runs) played equally important innings batting lower down the order.

West Indies vs India

West Indies and India played 248 International matches since 1948 when the two sides clashed for the first time to play a Test match. Windies won 99 of those matches, lost 96, tied 2 and drew 46 (Tests), while 5 matches were abandoned. In Tests alone, the two teams played 98 matches, out of which Windies won 30, India 22 and 46 matches were drawn. They played 133 ODIs to date, from which West Indies won 63, India 64, tied 2, while matches were abandoned. From the 17 T20Is played between against India, West India won 6, lost 10, while 1 match was abandoned.

It was Kapil Dev led Indian team which stood between Clive Lloyd’s side and the ICC World Cup trophy in 1983 at Lords. Their 102 runs defeat against India in Hero Cup final in 1993 shook the followers. In 1958, Windies registered the largest Test victory against India (by an innings and 336 runs), which is also the third-largest victory by margins. In 1997, in the third Test of India’s tour to West Indies, they bowled out the visitors for just 81 runs in the fourth innings and sealed the match by the narrow margin of 38 runs. It left India in disbelief as they failed to cross a small target of 120.

West Indies vs Pakistan

West Indies played 200 International matches against Pakistan, since 1958 when they played their first Test match at Bridgetown. They both won the equal number of matches – 91 – across all formats of the game. Out of 52 Tests they played, Windies won 17, lost 20 and 15 matches were drawn. From 134 ODI encounters, West Indies won 71 times, Pakistan won 60 games, and 3 matches tied. In T20 format, the two sides clashed on 14 times, Windies won just 3 T20Is and lost 11 against Pakistan. Their last encounter was in ICC 2019 World Cup Match 2, in which Oshane Thomas (4-27) led bowling unit bowled out Pakistan for just 105, and Windies eventually won the match by 7 wickets.

West Indies’ 790 runs against Pakistan in 1958 at Kingston is their highest score in an innings. Responding to Pakistan’s 328, Conrad Hunte (260 runs) and Garry Sobers (record 365 runs, not out) put up 446 runs record stand for the second wicket. Windies went on to win the match by an innings and 174 runs.

West Indies vs New Zealand

West Indies began playing against Kiwis since their tour to New Zealand in 1951. They won the 2-match Test series by 1-0. To date, the two sides played 46 Tests, out of which Windies won 12, lost 15 and 19 games ended in a draw. They played their first ODI game in ICC World Cup 1975, and since then they had 65 ODI encounters, out of which West Indies won 30, New Zealand 28, and 7 matches were abandoned. Windies played 16 T20Is against Kiwis, winning just 5 of them, while New Zealand won 8, 1 match was tied and 2 were abandoned.

In 2012 New Zealand’s tour of West Indies, the hosts white-washed the 2-match Test series. They defeated the visitors by 9 wickets in the first Test played in Antigua. The openers Chris Gayle (150 runs) and Kieran Powell (134 runs) put up 254 runs for the first wicket in the first innings.  Gayle’s 64 in the second innings comfortably sealed the match on Day 5. In the second Test, Marlon Samuels smashed a century in the first innings and a half-century in the second, to power the side to the 5-wickets victory. Their 348-runs chase against New Zeland in 1969 Test was the second-highest run-chase by West Indies.

West Indies vs South Africa

In Benson & Hedges World Cup 1991-92, West Indies played their first international match against South Africa, in which they lost by 64 runs while chasing a humble total of 200. The two teams played 28 Test matches so far, from which West Indies won just 3 Tests, lost 18 and drew 7 matches. Out of 62 One Day International encounters, Windies won 15, lost 44, tied 1 and 2 matches were abandoned. The two sides clashed in 10 T20I matches, from which West Indies won 4, and lost 6 games.

During their 2014 tour to South Africa, they faced one of the heaviest defeats, and biggest loss from South Africa, when they lost the first Test of the tournament by an innings and 220 runs. In 2005, Windies registered their biggest total against South Africa in Test innings – 747 runs – thanks to Chris Gayle’s 317 runs, and centuries from Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dwayne Bravo. The partnership of 331 runs between Gayle and Sarwan in that match is the record against South Africa for any wicket.

West Indies vs Sri Lanka

West Indies and Sri Lanka played their first international match in the 1975 Fun88 World Cup. The two teams have played 60 ODIs, out of which West Indies won 28, lost 29, and three matches were abandoned. Windies played their first Test match against the sub-continent team in 1993-94 when they toured Sri Lanka, and it ended in a draw. To date, the two sides played 20 Tests, out of which West Indies won 4, lost 9, and they drew 7 Tests. In T20s, these two teams clashed in 11 matches, out of which the Windies won 5, and lost 6 games against Sri Lanks.

So far, West Indies won only two Test Series against Sri Lanka, in 1997 and 2003. Each time, they had hosted Sri Lanka, played 2-match Test series, and won by 1-0. Chris Gayle’s highest individual score of 333 runs is against Sri Lanka, which he scored at Galle, on Nov 19 2010, in the first of the 3-match Test series. The score of 580 runs in the same innings of the Test is the highest total by West Indies against Sri Lanka.

West Indies vs Bangladesh

In the ICC World Cup, West Indies and Bangladesh had their first International encounter, in which Windies bowled out Bangladesh for just 182 runs thanks to Courtney Walsh’s 4 wickets haul. Windies chased down the total successfully, winning it by 7 wickets. The two sides played 38 ODI matches to date, out of which Windies won 21, lost 15 and 2 matches ended in no-results.

Their first Test encounter was in 2002-2003 when they travelled to Bangladesh to play 3 ODIs and 2 Tests. Windies won both the matches of the Test series. Overall, they played 16 Tests matches, from which Windies won 10, lost 4 and drew 2. From 12 T20Is encounters, West Indies won 6, lost 5, and one game was abandoned.

West Indies’ 648 runs in the second Test of 2-match Test series during West Indies tour of Bangladesh 2012 is their highest total against Bangladesh. Player of the match Marlon Samuels (260) and Player of the series Shivnarine Chanderpaul (unbeaten 150) were instrumental in their win by 10 wickets in this match.
