The Big Bash League 2021/22 finals is now upon us as Adelaide Strikers will be up against Hobart Hurricanes in the eliminator at the Melbourne Fun88 Ground. Adelaide Strikers finished in fourth position in the league while Hurricanes ended the league stage behind them in fifth.
Adelaide Strikers have managed to turn their campaign around in BBL11 in a short span of time. For most of the season, they were languishing in the trenches but a series of positive performances which resulted in a four-game winning run has helped them make a late dash for the playoffs in some style. They beat competition from Hobart Hurricanes to qualify in fourth place with 28 points to their name from six wins in 14 games.
Adelaide Strikers ended their league stage campaign with a massive morale-boosting win over defending champions Sydney Sixers. The bowling unit led by Fawad Ahmed put the opposition batters on a leash while Matt Renshaw and Ian Cockbain led from the front during the run-chase as Strikers won by eight wickets and with 15 balls to spare. That win will give them plenty of confidence going into the finals.
Hobart Hurricanes were desperate to avoid any late blushes towards the closing stages of the league campaign. They were fighting for the fifth spot along with Melbourne Stars. A win over Renegades in the penultimate league match sealed their fate making their previous clash with Stars little more than dead rubber.
Despite that, Hurricanes suffered an embarrassing loss as Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis ripped them into pieces. Maxwell scored the highest individual knock in BBL history with a fiery 154 not out off 64 deliveries. Stoinis’ 75 not out off 31 balls also supported Maxwell as Stars raced to the highest total in the history of Big Bash League (273). Even though Ben McDermott brought up another fine half-century, the target was never going to be realistic and Hurricanes ended up conceding a 106-run defeat.
That titanic defeat might have dented their competitive edge but Hurricanes beat Melbourne Stars by just a single point for the fifth position in the table. They’ve won seven games and lost on seven occasions.
As far as the head-to-head record is concerned, Adelaide Strikers have the upper hand. They have won 10 games while Hobart Hurricanes have won only on seven occasions. With that being said, Hobart Hurricanes have defeated Adelaide Strikers thrice over the last five games.

The level of the two teams has been pretty close this season. Adelaide Strikers put out some woeful displays before they managed to turn their season around with resilience and grit. Hobart Hurricanes have largely blown hot and cold.
The form of the two sides arriving into this game could be the determining factor in the contest. Adelaide Strikers have a massive advantage in that regard given their four-game winning streak which includes beating the defending champions recently. On the other hand, Hobart Hurricanes suffered a pretty ruthless hammering at the hands of Melbourne Stars and will be the underdogs here.
The Adelaide Strikers camp has been strengthened by the returns of Travis Head and Alex Carey. Travis Head, especially, had a magnificent Ashes campaign and was elected as the Player of the Series. This bolsters their already well-oiled batting order comprising the likes of Matt Renshaw, Jonathan Wells and Ian Cockbain. Strikers will have to go distance without star spinner Rashid Khan who has completed his BBL11 duties and has returned home.
Hobart Hurricanes will be able to field Scott Boland who has emerged as a revelation after the Ashes. Boland has had an instant impact with the ball for Australia and after missing the last league fixture against Melbourne Stars, he will be looking forward to having a similar impact on Hurricanes.
Adelaide Strikers will be heavily reliant on Ian Cockbain and the English batter has emerged as a star in the making. Travis Head’s form with the bat has also been mighty impressive and he will be looking to continue his purple patch here.
For Hobart Hurricanes, all eyes will be on Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott. The latter is the top-scorer in the competition and has been the best batsman this season. Scott Boland will also be looking to have an influence in the absence of injured quick bowlers Nathan Ellis and Joel Paris.
Ian Cockbain has been the star in the Adelaide Strikers’ batting order and he will find plenty of support with the returns of Travis Head and Alex Carey. Peter Siddle has also led the bowling unit well while Fawad Ahmed spun webs around the opposition in the previous clash.
Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade have been outstanding with the bat this season. Hobart Hurricanes missed the services of Scott Boland desperately in the previous outing.
Peter Siddle has been extremely consistent and is the highest wicket-taker in BBL11 so far. He has scalped 23 wickets in 14 games at an average of 18.73. Siddle has also taken a fifer this season.
Ben McDermott has been phenomenal this season. He has been on a different level compared to almost every other batter in the league. From the Adelaide Strikers camp, Ian Cockbain and Travis Head will also be contenders for the award.
In just three games, English batter Ian Cockbain has had a significant impact on the side. He has scored 123 runs in those matches and has been dismissed only once. Cockbain has a strike rate of 148.19.
Hobart Hurricanes will once again rely heavily on Ben McDermott. McDermott has been the best batter in the Big Bash League this season and is on top of the charts with 571 runs 12 11 innings. He has batted at an average of 51.90 and has a terrific strike rate of 153.49.
