Gujarat Titans will collide with Rajasthan Royals in the first Qualifier of IPL 2022 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals have been the two most impressive sides of IPL 2022. They finished on top of the table and therefore they get two bites of the cherry. Whoever wins this clash progresses to the final and the losing party gets another shot in the second qualifier.
Gujarat Titans have let the IPL 2022 table for nearly the entire season. Their consistency and resilience have been extremely remarkable, especially given that it is their debut IPL campaign. Having played 14 games, GT have only been on the losing side on four occasions. They are the only side to amass 20 points this season while having the best net run rate of +0.316.
With that being said, however, Gujarat Titans’ recent form will be concerning. They’re starting to lose steam in the most crucial phase of the season and have lost three of their last five matches. Gujarat Titans are heading into this encounter on the back of an eight-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last league fixture.
GT were below par with the bat and despite captain Hardik Pandya playing a knock of 62 not out, they were quite conservative and slow and could only manage 168 runs. The match signalled the return to form for Virat Kohli who had a dismal IPL campaign up until that point. Kohli smacked 73 off 54 to put RCB on the course to victory while Glenn Maxwell finished things off in style, winning a do-or-die encounter by eight wickets.
Rajasthan Royals, led by a revamped side for IPL 2022, have been massively impressive. They have plenty of experience and youthful exuberance in their squad and have gone toe-to-toe with the biggest teams in the league. They finished the league stage in the second position with 18 points. Although RR were level on points with Lucknow Super Giants, their net run rate of + 0.298 helped them secure better finish and an easier playoff route.
RR are currently on a two-game winning run. They defeated LSG by 24 runs and followed that up with a five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in their most recent game. Moeen Ali’s fantastic knock of 93 got hampered by the lack of support form the other end as CSK could only manage 150/6. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin proved to be the stars with the bat and led them to a fantastic win in the final over.
The two sides have faced each other only once before. Gujarat Titans won that encounter by 37 runs earlier this season.
Head-to-head record
Wins : Gujarat Titans 1, Rajasthan Royals 0
Last 5 matches: Gujarat Titans 1, Rajasthan Royals 0
This is a difficult result to predict beforehand. Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans have been two of the best teams in IPL 2022 and have been quite consistent. How about on the basis of form, Rajasthan Royals might just have the edge over Gujarat Titans. RR are currently on a two-match winning streak while GT have lost three of the last five matches.
Both sides have plenty of superstars in the squad who can take the game away from the opposition. Ultimately, the winner might be decided by who takes their chances better during the course of the game.
Gujarat Titans will turn towards captain Hardik Pandya who has been a reliable and commanding figure. Wriddhiman Saha, Shubman Gill, David Miller and Rahul Tewatia are also dependable. In Mohammed Shami, Lockie Ferguson and Rashid Khan, GT genuinely have some of the best bowlers in the T20 game.
For Rajasthan Royals all eyes will be on their batting unit comprising stars like Devdutt Padikkal, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and led by the great Jos Buttler. Shimon Hetmyer is also back in the side to add more firepower. Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Prasidh Krishna and Trent Boult will also be players to watch out for.
Yuzvendra Chahal has easily been one of the best acquisitions in the IPL this season and he has been magical so far for RR. Chahal leads the Purple Cap list with 26 wickets from 14 matches. He bowled a spell of 1/32 in the last match against RR.
Hardik Pandya, Shubman Gill, David Miller, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami are expected to be in contention to win the man of the match award. Meanwhile, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson, Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal and Trent Boult could be key for RR.
Hardik Pandya has been the leading run-scorer for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2022. He has amassed 413 runs at an average of 41.30 but has been guilty of taking too cautious an approach. GT will expect fireworks off his bat in this important and decisive clash.
Jos Buttler is the top-scorer in the Indian Premier League and he has already slammed three centuries so far. He comfortably leads the Orange Cap standings with 629 runs from 14 games and has been essential to RR’s success in IPL 2022 so far. Buttler has a humongous average of 48.39 but his form over the last few matches has been concerning. RR will be hoping he returns to his best version in the playoffs.
