It is game 15 in this IPL 2021 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) square off against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The two teams have had hugely contrasting starts to this 2021 edition.
KKR have struggled to get going. Their top-order batting and some disciplined bowling won them their opening game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). That was the only game they batted first. But since then, they have failed to chase down scores of 151 and 205 against Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) respectively.
The bowling has been pretty inconsistent but it is the middle-order who has been woeful. The power-packed and famed middle-order just hasn’t come to the party. Against MI, they couldn’t chase down 31 off the last five and 205 was always going to be a mountain too big to climb. The likes of Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik, Shakib Al Hasan and Andre Russell haven’t made enough contributions and KKR desperately need them to fire.
On the other hand, CSK lost their first game and Delhi Capitals (DC) comfortably chased down 189. However, the MS Dhoni-led side have been clinical in the other two games. Both the wins were as comprehensive as it could get. The bowlers got the job done in both the games.
In the game against PBKS, Deepak Chahar’s new-ball burst blew KL Rahul and co and restricted them to just 106/8 before the batters chased it down without breaking a sweat. The middle-order batting looked scratchy and inconsistent against Rajasthan Royals (RR) but CSK’s batting depth came to the fore which helped them get to 188. The bowling attack combined to skittle RR out for just 143/9.
Thus, MS Dhoni and co will be looking to build on this start. Moreover, they have an excellent head to head record against KKR, winning 15 out of the 24 games while KKR have won nine of those encounters.

Team News
Team news: Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR don’t have any injury worries and all players will be available for selection. With their next couple of games being at the Wankhede where spinners have struggled this season, the two-time champions might want to ramp up their pace bowling stocks. Lockie Ferguson could well come in and replace Shakib Al Hasan. Harbhajan Singh will most probably make way for Kamlesh Nagarkoti or Shivam Mavi. The top six might remain the same.
Team news: Chennai Super Kings
Lungi Ngidi is out of quarantine and is available for selection. However, with most bowlers performing fairly well, the South African pacer may have to wait a bit longer for his turn. Meanwhile, Jason Behrendorff may have just landed in India and needs to undergo the mandatory seven-day quarantine before he can join the CSK squad. Also, time may be running out for Ruturaj Gaikwad who has looked completely out of sorts. He may be replaced by the veteran Robin Uthappa.
Predicted XI
Kolkata Knight Riders: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan/Lockie Ferguson, Pat Cummins, Kamlesh Nagarkoti/Shivam Mavi, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy
Chennai Super Kings: Robin Uthappa/Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar
Key players
Andre Russell : Andre Russell finally struck a few off the middle in the last game against RCB and threatened to win KKR the game. But the mountain was too steep for him to climb as well on a tricky surface. After a couple of good games, his bowling took a beating in the last game. However, be it with bat or ball, the West Indian all-rounder will enjoy the surface at the Wankhede. True bounce and short boundaries might turn into his friend and he will be the one to watch out for. Russell’s form will be the key as KKR seek to turn things around.
Moeen Ali : Moeen Ali seems to have fit into the CSK side beautifully. The off-spinning all-rounder has looked in top form with the bat and has got solid starts in every game. He is leading the run charts for CSK this season – 108 runs at a strike-rate of 144.00 from three innings. Add to that, Ali’s effective off-spin and his knack of picking wickets regularly. He took 3/7 from three overs against RR. His overall economy rate this season is 6.46. Thus, his role with both bat and ball has grown and it might continue to be critical for CSK.
