Melbourne Stars will be up against Hobart Hurricanes in the 55 th match of the Big Bash League 2021. The two teams are ranked adjacent to each other in the BBL11 table and Stars are still vying for a place in the playoffs.
Despite a comfortable win in the recent Melbourne derby, Melbourne Stars failed to carry the same momentum into their match against Adelaide Strikers where they ended up losing by 23 runs. However, a massive eight-wicket win in their previous encounter against Brisbane Heat has kept their playoff hopes alive.
Glenn Maxwell starred with both the bat and the ball and aided by Joe Clarke’s terrific half-century, he secured a comfortable win for Melbourne Stars in the run-chase against Heat. Adam Zampa also bowled a terrific spell in the game while Marcus Stoinis looked in good touch.
With the help of that win, Stars are now sixth in the table and two points behind Hobart Hurricanes despite having played a game more. Their fate is not in their hands completely as they are relying on cross-town rivals Melbourne Renegades to defeat the Hurricanes. However, Melbourne Stars must ensure that they don’t afford another slip-up in this final league stage game.
Hobart Hurricanes will be desperate to avoid any late blushes in the closing stages of the season. Their match against Melbourne Renegades scheduled a day before will hold immense significance and a win in that game will almost see them through. However, they cannot afford to rest on their laurels.
Hurricanes are arriving into this game following an excellent win against Sydney Thunder where they demonstrated their nerves and composure. Matthew Wade played a captain’s knock. Riley Meredith picked up three wickets while Sandeep Lamichhane, Jordan Thompson and Tom Rogers were excellent in the death overs to deny Thunder any chance of a win.
Hobart Hurricanes have won and lost six games so far this season. They have an all-important two-point lead over Melbourne Stars and also have a game in hand. Hurricanes also have a better net run rate of +0.045 in case the NRR equation comes into play.
As far as the head-to-head record is concerned, Melbourne Stars have the upper hand. They have won 10 games while Hobart Hurricanes have won only on six occasions. Melbourne Stars have been more successful recently with three wins in their last five matches against Hobart Hurricanes.

Although Melbourne Stars aren’t short of explosive quality in their squad, they have hardly lived up to their potential in Big Bash League this season. COVID-enforced absences have also hurt the side tremendously and going into the final league game of the season, they will be the dark horses against Hobart Hurricanes.
Hobart Hurricanes registering a potential win against Melbourne Renegades before arriving to this clash would’ve already settled the qualification scenario. They had defeated Melbourne Stars by 24 runs earlier this season and will be the favourites once again.
The fixture against Hobart Hurricanes will be Melbourne Stars captain Glenn Maxwell’s 100 th Big Bash League match. He will be hoping to celebrate that milestone with a terrific performance.
Hobart Hurricanes are all set to welcome Scott Boland who proved to be a revelation for Australia during the recent Ashes campaign. Boland would like to follow his Ashes-heroics by securing the playoff spot for Hurricanes and Michael Neser and Mitchell Swepson have already returned to the squad.
Melbourne Stars will be heavily relied on the talents of Glenn Maxwell, Joe Clarke, Marcus Stoinis and Adam Zampa once again. They’ve missed the services of Maxwell, Clarke, Zampa and Stoinis at crucial junctures in the season due to COVID and their form has peaked and fallen accordingly. With their return, Stars are all set for a late flourish.
Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis are thrilling all-rounders who are dangerous in the T20 format. The duo can take the game away from the opposition at any point and are incredible assets to have.
Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade have been outstanding with the bat this season. Riley Meredith and Tom Rogers have also bowled their hearts out in BBL11.
Tom Rogers is the highest wicket-taker for Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League this season. He has picked up 15 wickets so far and has a terrific economy rate of 7.65.
Glenn Maxwell is among the most potent all-rounders in the world, especially in T20 cricket. Maxwell won the award in the previous game against Melbourne Renegades and would love to celebrate his 100 th match in the tournament with another defining performance.
Following his heroic knock in the last game, Joe Clarke has become the top-scorer for Melbourne Stars in BBL11. He has amassed 384 runs in 12 matches and is the fourth-highest scorer in the league. Clarke has a healthy average of 32 and has also scored runs at a strike rate of 148.26.
Hobart Hurricanes will once again rely heavily on Ben McDermott. McDermott has been the best batter in the Big Bash League this season and is on top of the charts with 516 runs in 11 innings. He has batted at an average of 51.60 and has a terrific strike rate of 152.21.
