It’s the second double-header of the season and Punjab Kings (PBKS) take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the afternoon game (match number 14) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Both sides haven’t had the best of starts to their 2021 campaign. These are two sides reeling at the bottom of the points table at the moment.

PBKS started off with a nervy four-run win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) while defending 222. But they’ve lost their last two games. In the second game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the famed batting line-up came crashing down as they were restricted to a mere 106/8 in their 20 overs. Meanwhile, they did score 195 batting first against Delhi Capitals (DC) but they were at least 15-20 runs short. And the bowlers continued leaking runs and were ineffective as the Delhi top-order carted them around the Wankhede Stadium.

Punjab might just be happy that they are moving away from Wankhede. However, the challenge for them will be adapting to the sluggish nature of the Chepauk tracks. Skipper KL Rahul will need to step up with the bat and up the ante and give PBKS some brisk starts in the powerplay as the wicket gets slower and slower as the game progresses. The bowlers will need to get a lot more consistent as well.

On the other hand, it’s been the same old problem for SRH that has persisted for a few years now. The middle-order puzzle isn’t solved yet and looks pretty wobbly. The side seems pretty unstable as well and they have chopped and changed quite a bit. SRH are the only side who are yet to register a win in this tournament so far.

In each of their three games, SRH have chased and have fallen 10 runs, six runs and 13 runs short while chasing scores of 188, 150 and 151 (against KKR, RCB and MI) respectively. In fact, SRH were in solid positions in each of the three run-chases but they managed to bottle it up somehow and their middle-order hasn’t stood up. The bowling has also leaked a lot of runs at the death and they will need to find ways to come out on top.

What might help SRH is that they face a fancied opponent. They have won 11 out of the 16 games that these two sides have played. Since the start of 2018, it’s even stevens at 3-3.

Team News

Team news: Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings don’t have any injury concerns. However, they will be looking to make a few changes. Fabien Allen is likely to come into the XI considering the slow nature of the Chepauk track. He will most likely replace Riley Meredith. Murugan Ashwin or Ravi Bishnoi might come into the mix as well considering the success of the leg-spinners in Chennai.

Team news: Sunrisers Hyderabad

Kane Williamson’s absence has really hurt SRH this season. However, he is getting close to being fully fit and may well slot into the middle-order for this game. If he fails to make the cut, Jason Holder might come in and replace Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Meanwhile, T Natarajan had a niggle and was rested in the last game. He may come back and replace Khaleel Ahmed if he is fully fit.

Predicted XI

Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Fabien Allen, Jhye Richardson, Jalaj Saxena/Murugan Ashwin/Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh

Sunrisers Hyderabad: David Warner (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Manish Pandey, Kane Williamson/Jason Holder, Vijay Shankar, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shahbaz Nadeem, Khaleel Ahmed/T Natarajan

Key players

Jonny Bairstow : Jonny Bairstow is in solid form with the bat and he has been the best batsman for SRH so far in this IPL 2021. The Yorkshire lad has made 110 runs which have come at a strike-rate of 146.66 which is by far the best for any SRH batter who has faced at least 15 balls. Bairstow moved up to open the batting against MI and smashed his way to 43 off just 22 balls. He will once again be the key at the top in SRH’s pursuit to get off to flying starts.

Fabien Allen : Fabien Allen could well make his debut for Punjab in this game and might be a vital player for them. The West Indian all-rounder is a utility cricketer. He can tonk at the back end and can have a big impact at No. 7. That is something that PBKS have missed in these initial few games. With the ball, he is pretty effective with his left-arm spin and the tracks in Chennai will only assist him.
