Sunrisers Hyderabad will be up against Rajasthan Royals in the fifth match of IPL 2022 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals have struggled with issues of consistency in recent seasons and will be searching for rhythm in the competition this time around.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have been one of the most disappointing teams in the Indian Premier League lately. They finished at the bottom of the table in IPL 2021 in a season where everything went wrong for the franchise. The very public feud with David Warner followed by his sacking mid-way through the competition did little to change the fate of the team. Kane Williamson’s side has also had to deal with a plethora of injury problems as well as poor management from the dugout.
Sunrisers Hyderabad didn’t exactly have a great time at the IPL 2022 mega auction table either. Although they’ve brought in a few reinforcements who can definitely taken on the opposition, it remains to be seen whether that will be enough to make SRH competitive again.
Rajasthan Royals have been in the headlines recently but for non-cricketing reasons. That is because they’ve largely been disappointing since their return to the IPL in 2018. Rajasthan Royals finished second from bottom in the league table last season, at the bottom of the table in IPL 2020 and second from bottom as well in IPL 2019. Rajasthan Royals haven’t been clinical enough under newly appointed captain Sanju Samson.
They probably learnt their lessons over the last three seasons and as a result, built an extremely competitive batting order in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The Royals do not lack hard-hitters who can change the course of the match at a moment’s notice. The acquisition of Yuzvendra Chahal for INR 6.5 CR was one of the best deals in the auction this time around! However, the absence of a game-changing all-rounder might end up hurting Rajasthan Royals over the course of the season.
There’s little to separate the two teams in the IPL head-to-head record. Sunrisers Hyderabad have won eight matches while Rajasthan Royals have been victorious on seven occasions. SRH and RR both managed a victory each against each other over the last three seasons.
Head-to-head record
Wins : Sunrisers Hyderabad 8, Rajasthan Royals 7
Last 5 matches: Sunrisers Hyderabad 3, Rajasthan Royals 2
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals have been extremely inconsistent lately. Both the teams can go from high to low pretty quick. With that being said, Rajasthan Royals might have a minor advantage heading into this match because their squad looks better on paper. It will be interesting to see how captain Sanju Samson utilizes the tools at his disposal this season.
Head to our SRH vs RR Prediction analysis loaded with stats.
Sunrisers Hyderabad have strengthened their middle-order which was an obvious chink in the armour for them in IPL 2021. However, the loss of Rashid Khan could prove to be a huge concern for the team. Rashid is one of the best T20 bowlers in the world and SRH haven’t been able to replace him well in the auction. Fitness issues of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and T Natarajan could also hamper the pace-bowling unit.
For Rajasthan Royals all eyes will be on their batting unit comprising stars like Devdutt Padikkal, Jos Buttler, Shimron Hetmyer, Rassie van der Dussen and Sanju Samson. Yuzvendra Chahal will also be a player to watch out for. However, the absence of a world-class all-rounder might hurt the side’s balance.

Yuzvendra Chahal is one of the most accomplished spin bowlers to emerge out of the Indian Premier League and find sustained success. He was one of the pillars of the Royal Challengers Bangalore team and would love to replicate his form here. Chahal has 139 wickets in 114 IPL matches in his career at an average of 22.28.
Kane Williamson, Rahul Tripathi and Washington Sundar could prove to be the contenders for the man of the match award from the SRH camp. From Rajasthan Royals, Sanju Samson, Shimron Hetmyer, Yuzvendra Chahal and Trent Boult could be key.
Kane Williamson is the most dependable batter in the Sunrisers Hyderabad lineup. He is a top-quality run-scorer who has a high IPL career average of above 40.
Devdutt Padikkal has been phenomenal since his breakthrough in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore. The left-hander has scored 884 runs in two seasons at an average of 31.57 but needs to improve his strike rate of 125.04. Padikkal also scored his maiden IPL century last season.
