In match number 36 of this 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL), Adelaide Strikers will be up against the Melbourne Stars at the Adelaide Oval. Both teams have had a pretty inconsistent run in this tournament and are coming into this game on the back of a loss in their respective last games. In fact, both these teams are stuck in the mid-table muddle.
Adelaide Strikers just haven’t been able to build any sort of momentum throughout this BBL season. From the nine games that they have played, they have won four and lost five. In fact, three out of those five losses have been in the last four games. However, the Strikers have accumulated five Bash Boost points which has taken their points tally to 17. With five games remaining, the Alex Carey-led might need to win at least three more games to remain in contention for a spot in the playoffs.
We are predicting an Adelaide Strikers win. See Match Predictions for the latest matches.
On the other hand, Melbourne Stars haven’t been all that convincing either. They started well but they seem to have fallen away after the first couple of games. All their four losses have come in their last five games. Glenn Maxwell and his men have lost crumbled quite a bit while chasing. Out of the four completed games in which they have batted second, the Stats have lost three of them. Hence, they need to pull up their socks quickly.
As far as head to head record between Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars is concerned, it is almost neck and neck. Adelaide Strikers have won six games while Melbourne Stars have won five. However, in the recent past, it is Adelaide Strikers who have dominated a bit more, having won four out of the last five games.
Team news: Adelaide Strikers
Despite the string of losses in their last few games, Adelaide Strikers are unlikely to make a lot of changes to their squad. They named an 18-man squad for the last game and barring an odd change here and there, it should remain the same.
Team news: Melbourne Stars
Haris Rauf returned to the Melbourne Stars squad for the first time and played his first game of this season against the Brisbane Heat. He replaced Zahir Khan as the third overseas player. The rest of the side wears an expected look.
Predicted XI
Adelaide Strikers : Matt Renshaw, Philip Salt, Alex Carey (c & wk), Jonathan Wells, Jake Weatherald , Ryan Gibson, Rashid Khan, Danny Briggs, Wes Agar, Peter Siddle, Harry Conway
Melbourne Stars : Andre Fletcher, Marcus Stoinis, Nick Larkin, Glenn Maxwell (c), Nicholas Pooran, Hilton Cartwright, Seb Gotch (wk), Adam Zampa, Sam Rainbird, Haris Rauf, Billy Stanlake
Key players
Nicholas Pooran : It may have been slightly frustrating to watch Nicholas Pooran this season. Barring the last game where he scored a five-ball 16 as he had to go after almost everything, the West Indian left-hander has had time to get himself in and set himself up for that big score. And he has done that as well more often than not but he has found ways to get out. Pooran has constantly thrown away starts. He has scores of 65, 6, 14, 26 and 16 this season for the Melbourne Stars and he has a strike-rate of 169.33. Thus, Pooran’s form has added to the woes of the Stars who’ve failed to chase down totals successfully. He will be a key player as Melbourne Stars look to turn things around.
Alex Carey : Alex Carey has been in very good form with the bat. The Adelaide Strikers skipper has registered just one single-figure score in this tournament and he is leading the run charts for his side. The left-hander has batted at No. 3 and 4 for most part of this tournament and has scored 258 runs at an average of 36.85. He has been a key part of this Adelaide Strikers batting line-up.
Adelaide and Melbourne are stuck in the mid-table muddle.
