It is game number five in the 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) and Adelaide Strikers finally play their first game of the season. They are the last team to kickstart their BBL 10 campaign. They face Hobart Hurricanes who beat the defending champions Sydney Sixers in the tournament opener.
Adelaide Strikers had a decent 2019-20 season where they finished third on the points table at the end of the league stages. They haven’t made a whole lot of changes to their side for this season.
Adelaide will miss a couple of key batsmen but the addition of Matt Renshaw will be a boost. The bowling wears a settled look as well. Philip Salt and Rashid Khan are likely to be the premier overseas players.
On the other hand, Hobart Hurricanes had a solid start to their BBL 10 campaign. They didn’t have a great start with either bat or ball but they found ways to come back well into the game. The Men in Purple were reduced to four for two before the middle-order came to the rescue. While defending 178, Sydney Sixers were 118/1 in the 14 th over and it was a collective bowling effort that pulled things back for Hobart Hurricanes as they won by 18 runs.
The overall head to head record is in favour of the Adelaide Strikers who lead 8-5. However, in the last four seasons, it has been almost even stevens with 5-4 in favour of Adelaide Strikers.
Adelaide Strikers : Adelaide Strikers will be without a couple of their big stars. Skipper Travis Head and fast bowler Michael Neser are linked with the Australian Test squad for the Test series against India which is going to start on the 17 th of December in Adelaide. On the other hand, wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey is currently leading Australia ‘A’ against India who are playing a day-night warm-up fixture in Sydney.
Hobart Hurricanes : Like Adelaide Strikers, Hobart Hurricanes will continue to miss a few of their top stars as they are either with the Australian Test team or with the Australia ‘A’ side who are currently playing a three-day warm-up game against India. Skipper Matthew Wade and Tim Paine are in the Australian Test squad. Meanwhile, Ben McDermott is with the Australia ‘A’ side.
Adelaide Strikers : Philip Salt, Jake Weatherald, Matthew Renshaw, Jonathan Wells, Matthew Short, Harry Nielsen (wk), Rashid Khan, Liam O’Connor, Peter Siddle, Wes Agar, Daniel Worrall
Hobart Hurricanes : Will Jacks, D’Arcy Short, Colin Ingram, Peter Handscomb (c & wk), Tim David, Macalister Wright, James Faulkner, Nathan Ellis, Johan Botha, Scott Boland, Riley Meredith
Rashid Khan : The Afghanistan star leg-spinner has been one of the big players for Adelaide Strikers for a few years now. Rashid is a strike bowler and has the ability to bamboozle any batsman in the world and most teams have looked to play him out. Yet, he has found ways to be successful. He has picked up 56 wickets in the last three seasons combined and has an economy of 6.36. Moreover, he can be very handy and effective with the bat lower down the order.
D’Arcy Short : The explosive left-handed opening batsman may have registered a duck in the tournament opener against Sydney Sixers. However, D’Arcy Short has been one of the most consistent performers in the last few years in the BBL. He has a very impressive BBL record – 1764 runs at an average of 45.23 and a strike-rate of 143.18. He will definitely be a key player for Hobart Hurricanes and will be the one to watch out for.
