56 league stage games are done and dusted and it is now time for the playoffs in this 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Two teams who won seven games apiece and finished fourth and fifth will be squaring off in the Eliminator. The winner will advance to the Knockout while the loser will be knocked out. Brisbane Heat are up against Adelaide Strikers in the Eliminator at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Brisbane Heat didn’t have the best of starts to this season as they lost their first three games. However, they bounced back well. The Chris Lynn-led side got on a roll and accumulated some excellent wins. There was a small stutter in the latter half of the season when they lost three out of four games but they recovered well from that as well. The Heat won their last two games to book a place in the playoffs and finished fourth on the points table with 29 points (seven wins, seven losses, eight Bash Boost points).
On the other hand, Adelaide Strikers blew hot and cold throughout the league stages. They just couldn’t build any momentum. They neither lost more than two games in a row nor did they win more than two games in a row, such was the inconsistency. Despite losing their last game to Sydney Thunder, the Strikers managed to sneak in to the playoffs as both Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Stars lost their respective last games as well. Moreover, a net run rate of +0.105 kept them ahead of the Hurricanes.
Brisbane Heat have momentum on their side while Adelaide Strikers come into this game on the back of a big loss. However, Adelaide Strikers beat Brisbane Heat both times in the league stages this season. Also, they are ahead in terms of head to head record as they have won eight games while Brisbane Heat have won five.
Team news: Brisbane Heat
Brisbane Heat are likely to name an unchanged 18-man squad for this Eliminator. There are no injury concerns in the side.
Team news: Adelaide Strikers
Like Brisbane Heat, Adelaide Strikers are unlikely to make any changes to their squad and there are no injury worries as well.
Predicted XI
Brisbane Heat : Chris Lynn (c), Max Bryant, Marnus Labuschagne, Joe Denly, Joe Burns, Lewis Gregory, Jimmy Peirson (wk), Jack Wildermuth, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, Ben Laughlin
Adelaide Strikers : Alex Carey (wk), Jake Weatherald, Philip Salt, Travis Head (c), Jonathan Wells, Ryan Gibson, Michael Neser, Daniel Worrall, Wes Agar, Liam O Connor, Peter Siddle
Key players
Alex Carey : Alex Carey has been one of the chief contributors with the bat for the Adelaide Strikers this season. The wicket-keeper batsman has amassed 412 runs in 12 innings and he has been consistent at the top of the order. Moreover, it was against Brisbane Heat that he smashed a ton this season. Out of the 12 times he has batted this season, Carey has been dismissed for a single-digit score just thrice. Thus, he will be the key for the Adelaide Strikers once again.
Marnus Labuschagne : Marnus Labuschagne joined the Brisbane Heat side only a few games ago and he has had a significant impact. He has batted at No. 3 and may not have got big runs but he has anchored the innings well. He has got scores of 28, 49 and 46 in the three games that he has played. In addition to this, the South African-born has been superb with the ball. The part-time leg-spinner has bowled just eight overs in three games but he has returned with six wickets. Hence, his all-round contribution will continue to be vital for the Brisbane Heat in the knockouts.
