The 14 th edition of the Indian Premier League is underway and in match number two, it is Chennai Super Kings (CSK) who square off against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
CSK didn’t have a great season in 2020. They started off poorly and the absence of a couple of key players didn’t help their cause either. They just about managed to avoid a wooden spoon finish and it was by far their worst season in the history of the IPL. This year, they seem to have a better balance and greater depth. The MS Dhoni-led side have a lot of options and are filled with all-rounders. They are going to bat deep this year and they are likely to go back to their original six-bowler theory.
On the other hand, Delhi have risen to the top in the last couple of years. They’ve shown great consistency. In 2019, they finished third before they ended up as runners-up last year. They will be hoping to go one step further this time around. However, they will be without their regular skipper Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant has taken over. There is no doubt Iyer will be missed in that batting line-up but DC have a variety of players to choose from. Thus, they look solid once again this year.
Delhi may have won both the league encounters last season against CSK but it is MS Dhoni’s men who have the wood over Delhi in the overall head to head count. CSK have won 15 out of the 23 games the two sides have played while Delhi have ended up winning just eight.

Team news: Chennai Super Kings
Unlike last season, there are no injury or fitness concerns for Chennai Super Kings. Suresh Raina returns for this year’s IPL and should slot back in at No. 3. They are spoilt for choice among their overseas stars and could field multiple combinations.
Team news: Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals will be without two of the premier fast bowlers. The South African fast bowling duo of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje will miss the first game as they are still in quarantine. Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury and Rishabh Pant will lead the side. They might have a dilemma over one of their overseas slots and it could be one of either Sam Billings, Shimron Hetmyer or Steve Smith. We could well see Delhi play just three overseas players in this game.
Predicted XI
Chennai Super Kings: Robin Uthappa, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Moeen Ali, Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran/Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Imran Tahir
Delhi Capitals: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Sam Billings/Shimron Hetmyer/Steve Smith, Rishabh Pant (C & wk), Marcus Stoinis, Chris Woakes, R Ashwin, Umesh Yadav, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma
Key players
Moeen Ali : Moeen Ali could well be the X-factor player for Chennai this time around. He can have an impact with both bat and ball. In fact, he can provide impetus in the middle-overs and can be used as a floater in the batting order. He has pretty good numbers in the IPL. The off-spinning England all-rounder has scored 309 runs while striking at 158.46 and has picked up 10 wickets at an economy rate of 7.14.
Rishabh Pant : Rishabh Pant has had a fantastic season for India. Be it red-ball cricket or white-ball, the wicket-keeper batsman has delivered in every single format and he has performed consistently. He had a sedate IPL season in 2020 but with Shreyas Iyer ruled out, Pant’s role will be huge in the Delhi middle-order.
