The second edition of the 2021 Indian Premier League is being hosted in the UAE due to the growing number of coronavirus cases in India. Despite multiple lockdowns, India failed to curb the growing number of cases, and now finds itself ranked as the country with the second-highest cases, overtaking Brazil.
BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla announced the change back in May, and preparations began almost immediately to make sure the venue switch went down smoothly. The IPL began on September 19 th and is expected to continue until the second week of October.
The UAE previously staged the IPL in 2014 making it an ideal venue for the second phase of the tournament. The country has coped well with the coronavirus pandemic, and according to reports, has seen fewer than 300 cases a day in the last few weeks. Furthermore, the International fun88in.in Council has its global academy in the UAE, which only further ensures teams will benefit from top-notch facilities over the course of the tournament.
Phase two of the 2021 edition of the IPL kicked off on Sunday, September 19, 2021, with Chennai Super Kings taking on Mumbai Indians .
The 2021 IPL had to be halted midway earlier this year owing to the increase in COVID-19 cases in India, and a switch to UAE was decided at the end of May. CSK currently sit atop the table on 12 points after having played eight games, while Sunrisers Hyderabad find themselves at the bottom with just two points from seven games.
The second phase of the tournament will see 31 games being played over a three-week period, with the final slated to be held on October 15, 2021, in Dubai. The league phase is set to end on October 8, 2021, and the first Qualifier is expected to be played on October 10, 2021, while the Eliminator will be held on October 11, 2021. The second Qualifier is set to be played on October 13, 2021, which will hopefully set up an interesting encounter for the final.
Defending champions Mumbai Indians will be expected to go all out and defend their crown while Virat Kohli, who will be captaining the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the final time will also be hoping to lead his side to the 2021 IPL title.
