Match Prediction – PBKS vs RCB, 26th Match IPL 2021 – Who Will Win Today’s Match?

Match number 26 of this IPL 2021 sees Punjab Kings (PBKS) taking on the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Ahmedabad. While RCB are finding ways and new players standing up to take them over the line, PBKS have just not got going once again.

For the second season in a row, Punjab have struggled to build any sort of momentum at the start of the tournament. It’s either the top three or nothing for their batting line-up. If KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal or Chris Gayle don’t fire at the top which has happened thrice already this season, Punjab come crumbling down. It’s not that they don’t have the firepower, the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Moises Henriques and Deepak Hooda are capable players but they just haven’t stepped up.

Thrice this season, Punjab have ended up with scores of under 125 and on each of the three instances, the top three were back in the hut early. Meanwhile, the bowling hasn’t had the runs to defend targets. They have conceded 190+ twice in Mumbai, once while defending 221 and the other while defending 195. The only time they bowled first which was against Mumbai Indians in Chennai, they kept them down to 131/6.

And now, they run into a high-flying RCB side. KL Rahul and co may have had the better of RCB both times last season and have a 14-12 head to head advantage but with the form RCB are in, it’s going to be hard work.

RCB’s top five looks solid. Someone or the other invariably fires. If they are in a hole, AB de Villiers wields his magic to take them through. Glenn Maxwell’s addition has brought stability to the middle-order. The openers Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal have been starting well and if they get going, they showed what they can do against Rajasthan Royals.

The bowling has come a long way as well. There is much better depth and Kohli has a lot of options to play with. Moreover, the rise of Mohammed Siraj and Harshal Patel as death bowlers has been magnificent. Their execution has been spot on more often than not. Patel picks up wickets for fun in the back half of the innings while Siraj has been excellent in all phases of the game. Kyle Jamieson seems to be a good addition as well and he is constantly chipping in with wickets as well.

Thus, RCB seem to be firing on all cylinders. The death bowling can be found out a touch, especially if Jamieson is entrusted to bowl more than one over. But the Virat Kohli-led side are in a good space and will be looking to continue this momentum.

Team News

Team news: Punjab Kings

Nicholas Pooran’s poor form may see him face the axe and Punjab could bring in Dawid Malan in place of the West Indian. The bowling attack is unlikely to see any changes.

Team news: Royal Challengers Bangalore

RCB have lost a couple of overseas cricketers as Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson have flown back home due to personal reasons. Scott Kuggeleijn who was a part of the Mumbai Indians bubble as a reverse player and net bowler has been named as the replacement for Richardson. However, RCB might not make any changes to the XI that played against Delhi.

Predicted XI

Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Dawid Malan/Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda, Moises Henriques, Shahrukh Khan, Chris Jordan, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh

Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (c), Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers (wk), Washington Sundar, Daniel Sams, Kyle Jamieson, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj

Key players

KL Rahul : KL Rahul has been absolutely critical for Punjab once again this season. The Karnataka lad has scored three half-centuries so far and in each of those three games, Punjab’s batting did well and got to good scores. Two of those came in wins as well. However, in the other three games when the PBKS skipper failed, Punjab have ended up with totals under 125. Hence, Punjab have been heavily reliant on their skipper and they will want him to fire against RCB, a team that he has done well against in the recent past. He has scores of 47, 21, 18, 42, 132 not out and 61 not out against them while playing for Punjab.

Yuzvendra Chahal : Yuzvendra Chahal hasn’t looked at his best this season. The premier RCB leg-spinner has picked up just three wickets in just six games so far. Moreover, he is conceding runs at an economy rate of 8.21. In the last three games, he hasn’t even completed his quota and that has shown the depth of RCB’s bowling. Chahal’s loss of form hasn’t really affected RCB yet but he is going to be crucial going ahead. He has a decent record against Punjab (22 wickets at an average of 16.55) and RCB will be hoping their wily leg-spinner gets back to his best against one of his favoured opponents.
