Match Prediction – PBKS vs CSK, 8th Match IPL 2021 – Who Will Win Today’s Match?

It is match number eight of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) square off against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. These two sides had high-scoring opening encounters but ended up on different sides of the result.

PBKS survived a thrilling onslaught from Sanju Samson and young Arshdeep Singh held his nerve to deliver a four-run win against Rajasthan Royals (RR). The batting was simply outstanding in that game for KL Rahul and co. There is no doubt the pitch was a belter but the power of the Punjab batting came to the fore. The skipper led from the front, Mayank Agarwal got a decent start, Chris Gayle looked solid and Deepak Hooda was the surprise package who was the game-changer for Punjab in the middle-overs.

The bowling struggled with dew around and on a batting beauty at the Wankhede. Mohammed Shami and young left-arm fast bowler Arshdeep Singh were brilliant as they took five wickets between them and went under 9 runs an over. However, the overseas pacers were very expensive. However, the 2014 finalists might not want to focus too much on their first performance and will hope they can get better.

On the other hand, it was CSK’s middle-order that came to their rescue but it wasn’t enough as the bowling seemed to lack bite and just didn’t look threatening enough. After losing the openers cheaply, the CSK middle-order resurrected the innings with the likes of Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and Sam Curran making vital contributions. However, the bowling just didn’t look like picking up a wicket as they conceded 189 in just 18.4 overs and could return with just three wickets.

It clearly showed that the three-time champions missed the wicket-taking ability of someone like Imran Tahir or even Lungi Ngidi on a belter of a track in Mumbai. Deepak Chahar looked rusty while Shardul Thakur was very expensive. Sam Curran couldn’t deliver with the ball either while the spinners looked ineffective. Thus, MS Dhoni and co lamented on the execution of the bowlers but he also hoped that they can improve and learn from their first game.

There is no news on Aussie left-arm fast bowler’s arrival but for now, he will not be available for this game as well

Starting team

CSK : Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Suresh Raina, Moeen Ali, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (capt&wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar

Kings : KL Rahul (capt&wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, M Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, M Ashwin, Riley Meredith, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh

Key players

Mohammed Shami : Mohammed Shami had a pretty solid return to competitive cricket after recovering from his injury. The ace PBKS fast bowler returned with figures of 2/33, picking up key wickets of Ben Stokes and Riyan Parag at crucial junctures which played a massive role in his side’s four-run win over RR.

With the short boundaries and the track being a batting beauty at the Wankhede, Shami’s role with the ball will once again be huge. If he can continue to produce performances like he did in the first game and lead the attack, Punjab will be better placed more often than not.

Moeen Ali : Moeen Ali seems to be a very good inclusion in the CSK setup. The off-spinning all-rounder walked out at No. 3 and infused life into CSK’s innings with the bat after they were 7/2 in the third over against Delhi. He may have scored just 36 but he set the tone.

Ali is a hard-hitter and can take the game away from the opposition in the middle overs. In addition to this, his bowling will also be vital for CSK as he is one of the only two spinners alongside Ravindra Jadeja that CSK are likely to play. Hence, Ali will certainly be one of the players to watch out for in this game.
