The Chennai and Mumbai legs are done and dusted and one half of the IPL 2021 caravan moves to Ahmedabad. Both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played their first five games at these two venues – KKR played three in Chennai and two in Mumbai while it was vice-versa for Punjab. And both teams haven’t had the best of first halves this season.
PBKS may be the happier side coming into this game as they beat the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last game but there is a lot of work to do for them. If the famed top three fail, the batting falls off the cliff and it’s already happened twice which resulted in paltry totals. Shahrukh Khan has shown promise but the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Moises Henriques and Deepak Hooda (who was superb in the first game) need to be contribute a lot more.
The Punjab bowling was very impressive in the last game but they will constantly be put under pressure. The inclusion of Ravi Bishnoi seems to have added some teeth to a rather indifferent bowling attack. They will need shrug off the inconsistency and the execution and control will need to get better.
Meanwhile, things have gone downhill for KKR ever since they couldn’t chase down 31 runs off the last five overs against MI. That was their second game of the tournament and they had already registered a 10-run win in their tournament opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). That loss against MI from a commanding position would’ve hurt and KKR haven’t recovered since. They lost Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) while chasing big targets (both in excess of 200) before being outplayed by Rajasthan Royals (RR) in all three departments.
The bowling has blown hot and cold a touch but it is the batters that have disappointed. The lack of runs from Shubman Gill and Eoin Morgan alongside the inconsistency of the KKR middle-order has cost them quite a bit. The Eoin Morgan-led side next face a side they have enjoyed playing against. KKR have won 18 games against Punjab while the latter have manged just nine. Thus, KKR will hope to take some positive from that head to head stat.

Team News
Team news: Punjab Kings
PBKS have no injury concerns and all the players are fit and available for this game. They replaced Murugan Ashwin with Ravi Bishnoi and the latter was mighty impressive. Moreover, their fifth bowling option might be a concern but KL Rahul and co are unlikely to change a winning combination.
Team news: Kolkata Knight Riders
KKR don’t have any injury worries and all the players will be available for this game. They might look to make a tactic change according to the pitch in Ahmedabad. Harbhajan Singh might slot back in and he may replace one of the Indian pacers Shivam Mavi or Prasidh Krishna if the 22-yard surface dished out is on the drier side.
Predicted XI
Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda, Moises Henriques, Shahrukh Khan, Fabian Allen, Mohammed Shami, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh
Kolkata Knight Riders: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Mavi/Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna
Key players
Chris Gayle : It’s been a slightly up and down tournament for Chris Gayle so far. The Universe Boss who has been batting at No. 3 since the last IPL season has had a couple of scores of 40s while three in the teens. He played a nice, adaptive knock against MI in the last game and his unbeaten 43 helped PBKS get over the line.
Gayle will continue to be the key for Punjab going forward and his role in the middle overs, upping the ante will be critical. He has an excellent record against his first IPL side, KKR against whom he has amassed 700 runs at an average of 46.67 and a strike-rate of 152.17.
Shubman Gill : It hasn’t been a great start to this IPL 2021 for Shubman Gill. The 21-year-old opening batsman has mustered just 80 runs in five innings with a highest of 33. He has got a few solid starts but he has failed to kick on and get those big scores. Thus, KKR will be hoping that Gill can roar back into form soon.
He is crucial at the top of the order and if he can set the tone early on, it makes the job easier for the power-packed middle-order. What might help is KKR’s next opponents – PBKS against whom Gill has an excellent record. Gill has smashed three half-centuries in his last three knocks against Punjab and has been dismissed only twice in five innings.
