It is the battle of the heavyweights and it is the El Classico of the IPL as Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians (MI) take on MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match 27.
It’s been an up and down season so far for MI but it is something they are used to. The last couple of seasons they had blistering starts but they have been slow starters more often than not and tend to pick up pace as the tournament progresses. The defending champions will be pleased to see Quinton de Kock and Krunal Pandya among the runs and back in form.
The fact that they moved out of Chennai also played a part and MI were very happy with the change in venue as well.
Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult have continued their good work. They may not be picking wickets in clusters but be it with the new ball or at the death, the experienced duo have been very consistent and are reliable customers. Rahul Chahar has once again impressed and his form only adds some solidity to that bowling line-up.
Thus, MI will be happy to be back to winning ways and on track. However, they run into a rampant CSK side. MS Dhoni’s men have been dominant this season and in fact, they are looking like the team to beat. They have won five games in a row and are sitting pretty at the top of the points table.
CSK’s top-order has fired and they have been super consistent. Backing Ruturaj Gaikwad has paid off as the young opener has smashed two half-centuries in his last three innings while Faf du Plessis has recorded three in a row and the duo have given some solid starts. Moeen Ali at No. 3 has been superb while the middle-order looks pretty decent as well.
The bowling hasn’t really looked threatening but they are getting the job done.
MI hold the aces as far as the head to head record is concerned. They lead the rivalry 18-12 and in fact, they have been absolutely dominant against CSK since 2015. In the last 12 encounters between these two successful IPL teams, MI have won 9 while CSK have won just three.

Team News
Team news: Mumbai Indians
MI have no injury concerns and have all players fit and available for selection. Nathan Coulter-Nile was brought into the side in the last game and looked rusty. However, he is likely to remain in the side and MI may not tweak a lot.
Team news: Chennai Super Kings
Moeen Ali had a tight hamstring but he has recovered fully and walked back into the XI in CSK’s last game against SRH. Moreover, the MS Dhoni-led side are not known to make a lot of changes and they are likely to go in with the same XI.
Predicted XI
Mumbai Indians: Quinton de Kock (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jayant Yadav, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Lungi Ngidi
Key players
Kieron Pollard : Kieron Pollard hasn’t looked at his best in this IPL 2021. The hard-hitting West Indian all-rounder has mustered just 81 runs in six innings so far. However, he seems to be slowly getting back into rhythm. He scored an unbeaten 35 against SRH that helped MI get to 150.
He has scored unbeaten 16s in the last two games and particularly in the game against RR, he looked very fluent. Thus, Pollard could well be the one to watch out for. He also has good record against CSK – 467 runs at an average of 33.36 and a strike-rate of 165.60. With the ball, he has taken 12 wickets against them.
Faf du Plessis : Faf du Plessis has been batting beautifully this season. He had a scratchy start but in the last few games, he has really upped his game and has been supremely consistent.
The former South African skipper has struck three successive half-centuries and has amassed 270 runs at an average of 67.50 while striking at 140.62. Also, du Plessis has taken the attack to the bowlers in the powerplay and he has scored 136.
