It is the first double-header of the season and in the second game of the day, Delhi Capitals face Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both teams are coming into this game on the back of a loss in their last game.
After winning their first game rather comfortably, Delhi Capitals (DC) went down in a final over classic against Rajasthan Royals (RR). In fact, it was a game that they should’ve won. The Delhi batting couldn’t get going on a tacky surface but the bowlers had RR on the mat. At 104/7 and 44 runs in the bank, it felt the 2020 finalists would close the game out. However, a couple of poor overs from Kagiso Rabada and Tom Curran ended the game for them.
The bowling has been inconsistent and DC have struggled at the death. However, Anrich Nortje’s return should be a big boost and Rabada returned in the last game as well which should keep them better placed. The middle-order didn’t have much to do in the first game and faltered in the game. Thus, Rishabh Pant and co will be hoping to deliver and get consistent as the tournament progresses.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings (PBKS) had survived a stunning knock from Sanju Samson and won that game by four runs, defending 221 successfully. However, they couldn’t even get half of that in the second game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The top-order was blown away by the swing and seam of Deepak Chahar who exploited the conditions beautifully. It was a slightly sticky track but it was definitely not one where 106 was going to be enough.
The Punjab bowling has remained inconsistent. The Australian fast bowling duo Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith came back decently after the hammering they received in the first game. The Indian fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh have been superb in both games and they will hold the key going forward as well.
Hence, both sides will be aiming to bounce back strongly after their respective defeats. Punjab have had the better of Delhi in the head to head games. The 2014 finalists have won 15 times while Delhi have ended up winning only 11.

Delhi Capitals
Anrich Nortje has returned with three negative COVID-19 reports. Thus, he is out of isolation and has joined the Delhi squad. He may replace Tom Curran in the bowling attack. The rest of the playing XI is likely to remain the same.
Punjab Kings
There are no injury concerns for PBKS. However, they might consider making a couple of changes. Chris Jordan may come in for Riley Meredith who has been very expensive. Murugan Ashwin has been ineffective and Ravi Bishnoi may replace him.
Predicted XI
Delhi Capitals: Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Marcus Stoinis, Lalit Yadav, Chris Woakes, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Avesh Khan
Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Deepak Hooda, Nicholas Pooran, Shahrukh Khan, Jhye Richardson, Murugan Ashwin/Ravi Bishnoi, Riley Meredith/Chris Jordan, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh
Key players
Shikhar Dhawan : Shikhar Dhawan has been a vital component in the Delhi side over the last couple of years. The left-handed opener provides solidity at the top and his consistent form has been one of the big reasons why DC have been so successful. Moreover, his intent has gone up as well, especially in the powerplay and he has given DC brisk starts quite frequently. Dhawan may have failed in the last game but he scored a match-winning 85 in the first game. That was his 12 th 50+ score since the start of 2019 and he has scored in excess of 1200 runs in this period.
Chris Gayle : PBKS have a power-packed batting line-up and Chris Gayle is at the forefront of it at No. 3. The Universe Boss has looked in good touch and has been getting some good starts, batting at the one-drop slot. However, unlike the Gayle of old, he hasn’t been able to convert these starts into big knocks. Thus, the hard-hitting left-hander who has amassed 338 runs in nine innings at No. 3 will be critical for Punjab as they look to bounce back.
