In the seventh game of this 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Rajasthan Royals square off against Delhi Capitals at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) suffered a heart-breaking loss against Punjab Kings (PBKS) as they fell four runs short while chasing 222. It was a magical innings from skipper Sanju Samson who single-handedly took the side so close.
The bowling looked slightly toothless in the absence of Jofra Archer. Chris Morris who is a reputed death bowler also struggled and it was only the debutant Chetan Sakariya who delivered. The spinners looked clueless on a belter and that might worry the RR team management. The batsmen got starts but just couldn’t convert them and support Samson from the other end. Thus, RR will be looking to bounce back after that first loss and it is the bowling attack that needs to get better and a little more consistent.
On the other hand, Delhi Capitals continued from where they left off in the 2020 season where they finished as runners-up. Rishabh Pant started off his captaincy tenure with a win as Delhi got past Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The openers Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan set the platform with a stunning 138-run opening stand in their chase of 189 which Delhi wiped out with eight balls to spare. Barring Ravichandran Ashwin and Tom Curran, the others bowlers fared really well. Thus, the 2020 finalists will be looking to build on that start.
The head to head record between RR and DC is neck and neck. Both sides have won 11 games apiece. However, Delhi have won the last five games in this rivalry while Rajasthan won seven games on the trot against Delhi between 2013 and 2018.

Team news: Rajasthan Royals
Jofra Archer underwent a hand surgery and he will resume light training this week. However, his availability is not known yet. Ben Stokes hurt his finger while taking the catch of Chris Gayle in the game against PBKS and it is reported that he has a broken hand. That will be a huge blow to RR. Jos Buttler might move to the top of the order and either of Liam Livingstone or David Miller might replace him.
Team news: Delhi Capitals
Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje will be out of quarantine and are likely to be available for this game. Rabada is a certain starter and he is most probably going to replace Tom Curran. However, with Axar Patel still in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19, Delhi might want to stick with Chris Woakes at No. 7 and Nortje might not slot back in straightaway. Moreover, Ishant Sharma has a niggle and after his performance in the last game, Avesh Khan will continue to play as the third fast bowler.
Predicted XI
Rajasthan Royals: Manan Vohra, Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Liam Livingstone/David Miller, Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Shreyas Gopal, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman
Delhi Capitals: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (c & wk), Marcus Stoinis, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Woakes, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kagiso Rabada, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan
Key players
Sanju Samson : It was a stunning innings from Sanju Samson against PBKS. He was making his captaincy debut and he became the first player in the history of the IPL to score a ton on captaincy debut. Samson struck a fabulous 119 and almost took RR home in that mammoth run-chase of 222. Samson has had the tendency of taking off brilliantly almost every season but inconsistency creeps in and he fades away as the tournament progresses. However, he will be critical for RR at No. 3, especially after Ben Stokes’ suspected injury.
Shikhar Dhawan : Shikhar Dhawan has been absolutely magnificent in the last couple of seasons in the IPL. His T20I numbers may not be encouraging enough but his form in the IPL has been stellar. The left-handed Delhi opener scored 521 runs in the 2019 season before smashing 618 runs at an average of 44.14 and a strike-rate of 144.73 in IPL 2020. He has started this tournament with a bang as well as he smacked 85 to help Delhi hunt down 189 with ease.
