Match Commentary
It’s been hard work on the Chepauk track and both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) have found that out first hand. While Mumbai have a win-loss record of 2-2, Punjab lost their only game that they played at this venue in this 2021 season. Both sides are coming off a loss and will be looking to bounce back.
Punjab seem a bit lost and are looking completely out of sorts. The KL Rahul-led side have lost three on the bounce and it could’ve well been four on the trot if not for those last two overs from Riley Meredith and Arshdeep Singh against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening encounter. Since then, their batting has flopped twice – scoring 106/8 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and 120 allout against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).
Meanwhile, their bowling has just not looked threatening enough. The Indian fast bowlers have been slightly inconsistent, especially Mohammed Shami who started off well but his form seems to have tapered off in the last couple of games. The spinners have looked ineffective and have picked up just two wickets from 24 overs. Thus, things are looking dire for Punjab and they need to pull up their socks quickly, else their campaign could well turn out to be like last year.
They face an opposition against whom they have a decent head to head record. Punjab have won 12 games against MI while the latter have won 14. Moreover, the Rohit Sharma-led side have also lost a couple of games already.
MI might just shrug off their last loss against Delhi. However, they will be worried about the form of their powerhouse 5, 6 and 7. The Pandya brothers and Kieron Pollard haven’t really fired. In fact, in almost every game, MI have got a good start at the top but the middle-order failures have seen them crumble to par or below-par totals. The bowling has been pretty good. The premier fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult have led the charge while Rahul Chahar has been a wicket-taking option in the middle overs.

Team News
Team news: Punjab Kings
There are no injury concerns for Punjab. However, they have chopped and changed quite a bit. They did make a couple of changes in the last game and even though they lost, they may just stick with the same XI for another game.
Team news: Mumbai Indians
Despite the loss against Delhi, MI are unlikely to make any changes. Rohit Sharma was off the field for most part when MI were bowling. He revealed that he was struggling with a hamstring niggle but he is likely to be fit in time for this game.
Predicted XI
Punjab Kings: KL Rahul (c & wk), Mayank Agarwal, Chris Gayle, Moises Henriques, Nicholas Pooran, Deepak Hooda, Shahrukh Khan, Fabian Allen, Murugan Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh
Mumbai Indians: Quinton de Kock (wk), Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult
Key players
KL Rahul : In the two games that KL Rahul scored, Punjab got big scores and were in the game. In the other two games that he was out cheaply, Punjab could not even cross 120. Thus, the PBKS skipper will be absolutely crucial to his side’s chances. He will have to bat long and bat big. Moreover, the onus might be on him to up the ante at the top and in the powerplay as the pitch gets slower and slower to bat on as the game progresses.
Rohit Sharma : Rohit Sharma seems to be batting well and he has got off to a solid start in each of the four games in this season. The MI skipper has scores of 19, 43, 32 and 44 so far and is striking at 135.29 as well. However, he hasn’t been able to convert these starts into a big score and more often than not, Rohit has got out at crunch junctures of the game. Hence, with the middle-order misfiring, MI will hope their skipper can get that big scores. Moreover, Rohit will fancy his chances in this game as he has a good record against Punjab – 669 runs at an average of 33.45 which includes six fifties.
