It is the battle of the heavyweights and a top of the table clash in match number 19 as MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Both CSK and RCB have had a wonderful start to this IPL 2021 and seem to be flying high.
CSK looked a touch lost in the first game against Delhi Capitals and there were a lot of questions that came up. However, the three-time IPL champions have come back superbly to win three on the bounce.
The CSK batting has come to the fore and has done really well. In fact, the entire batting line-up has chipped in really well in throughout the batting order. Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni were the only ones who hadn’t got runs. Gaikwad finally got runs and repaid the faith of Dhoni and the team management while the CSK skipper got a nice cameo.
There might be a slight concern with the bowling. They are reliant on Deepak Chahar and Sam Curran to provide them with early breakthroughs. But with Lungi Ngidi’s inclusion in the last game, it seems to have added little more teeth to the bowling attack. Thus, CSK don’t have a lot of worries and will be looking to make it four in a four.
It has been a start like never before for RCB. Before this 2021 season, RCB had won two games to start an IPL tournament only once and that was back in 2014. However, this season has been their best-ever start to an IPL season, winning four out four.
The batting has been superb. With Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal back amongst the runs, the entire batting line-up has now contributed and seems to be in solid form. Even on slow decks in Chennai, they found ways to get big scores and also chase down 160 against the defending champions Mumbai Indians. Glenn Maxwell has been a revelation this season while AB de Villiers continues to do magical things.
But what’s been impressive and heartening is RCB’s bowling. The pace attack has been outstanding. Mohammed Siraj has been the standout with the new ball and his execution at the death has got better as well. Harshal Patel has been RCB’s designated death bowler and he has delivered. Kyle Jamieson has been pretty impressive too while the spinner has chipped in as and when they’ve been summoned.
Thus, all in all, it’s been a complete team effort from RCB so far. They don’t have a great head to head record against CSK but Virat Kohli and co will be confident after the start that they’ve got.

Team News
Team news: Chennai Super Kings
Dwayne Bravo was rested from the last game and Lungi Ngidi came into the side. The South African fast bowler did really well and is likely to hold on to his place. Meanwhile, Jason Behrendorff has landed in India but he is still in quarantine. He is most probably going to be available for CSK’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on the 28 th of April. Thus, CSK are likely to go in with an unchanged XI.
Team news: Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB have all players fit and available for this game. Daniel Sams has recovered completely from COVID-19 as well and was available for selection in the last game as well. For the first time this season, RCB may well go in with an unchanged side.
Predicted XI
Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Sam Curran, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi, Deepak Chahar
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Virat Kohli (c), Devdutt Padikkal, Shahbaz Ahmed, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers (wk), Washington Sundar, Kyle Jamieson, Kane Richardson, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal
Key players
Ravindra Jadeja : Ravindra Jadeja may not look like the most important player in the CSK line-up. The left-handed all-rounder has chipped in decently in this tournament. However, his role against RCB might prove to be vital, especially with the ball. Jadeja has excellent numbers against Glenn Maxwell and has got him out four times in the IPL and the Australian has a strike-rate of 116.67 against him. Meanwhile, Kohli has been out only thrice against Jadeja but has a strike-rate of just 108.85. The Saurashtra all-rounder seems to be in good form with the bat as well.
Virat Kohli : Virat Kohli was back among the runs and he finally convert a start into a big score. The RCB skipper smashed an unbeaten 72 and looked in splendid form, especially in the second half of his knock. Thus, this is a big positive for RCB as they head into the game against CSK. Kohli has a fantastic record against MS Dhoni and co. Kohli has aggregated 887 runs at an average of 42.24 and has hit eight half-centuries, including two in as many games in the 2020 season.
