Match Prediction IPL 2021: RR vs KKR, Match 18 Preview

Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have won one and lost three and are looking a bit wobbly at the moment.

The RR batting line-up just hasn’t arrived. Despite playing all their games at the Wankhede Stadium, RR batters haven’t made full use of the conditions. The openers seem to be out of sorts and Jos Buttler’s indifferent form has really hurt RR at the top of the order. Meanwhile, skipper Sanju Samson’s inconsistency is the talk of the town and RR will expect more from him. David Miller played that one match-winning innings.

Meanwhile, the likes of Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia chipped in with excellent cameos in the last game but cameos are never going to be enough. The bowlers haven’t stepped up either and in the absence of Jofra Archer, this attack isn’t looking as penetrative. They come into this game on the back of a serious drubbing. While the lower middle-order saved them with the bat, RR conceded 178 in 16.3 overs and lost by 10 wickets against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

On the other hand, KKR will be high on spirits after their stunning comeback in the last game. They were 31/5 chasing 221 but the likes of Andre Russell, Pat Cummins and Dinesh Karthik turned the game upside down but regular wickets meant they fell short, not by much though. The lack of runs from Shubman Gill and skipper Eoin Morgan is a concern while the bowling proved to be expensive in their first outing in Mumbai.

Lockie Ferguson is still on the bench and he could well add some firepower to the bowling attack. He provides a wicket-taking and economical option. The KKR batting line-up is settled but it needs a lot more consistency.

As far as head to head records are concerned, KKR lead with a 12-10 advantage. In fact, since the start of the 2018 season, RR have won just one game against the ‘Men in Purple’. Thus, Sanju Samson and co will be hoping to turn things around, both, against KKR and overall as well.

Team News

Team news: Rajasthan Royals

RR have had an injury-prone season. Jofra Archer hasn’t arrived yet as he is recovering from a hand injury. Ben Stokes broke his finger in the game against Punjab in RR’s tournament opener. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone has pulled out of this season due to bio-bubble fatigue.

Manan Vohra has mustered just 42 runs in four innings and may well be replaced at the top.

Team news: Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR have Lockie Ferguson waiting in the wings. With Mumbai not yielding big returns, he could well be in with a chance of playing his first game of this season. He might replace Sunil Narine and Pat Cummins will move up to No. 7 if that happens. The rest of the squad is likely to remain the same.

Predicted XI

Rajasthan Royals: Jos Buttler, Anuj Rawat/Yashasvi Jaiswal/Manan Vohra, Sanju Samson (c & wk), Shivam Dube, David Miller, Riyan Parag, Rahul Tewatia, Chris Morris, Shreyas Gopal, Chetan Sakariya, Mustafizur Rahman

Kolkata Knight Riders: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Eoin Morgan (c), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Andre Russell, Pat Cummins, Sunil Narine/Lockie Ferguson, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Varun Chakravarthy, Prasidh Krishna

Key players

Sanju Samson : Sanju Samson started this tournament with a blazing hundred and almost took RR over the line. However, since then, he’s had a string of low scores. This has been Samson’s problem over the years as his form tends to taper off as the season progresses. However, the RR skipper has just managed to throw away his wicket away in the last three games. Thus, RR need their captain to come good if they want to turn things around.

Andre Russell : Andre Russell had a couple of quiet games, especially with the bat. He took a five-wicket haul against MI and has been constantly chipping away with wickets at the death.

However, it is Russell’s form with the bat that is key to KKR’s chances and the two-time champions will be happy with how he has batted in the last couple of games. The big Jamaican all-rounder smashed 31 against RCB and he looked in ominous touch in the game against CSK as he was the one who started the counter-attack and gave KKR a chance. Thus, Russell is going to be the one to watch out for once again.

The short boundaries and flat track at the Wankhede will continue to assist him.
