We’re still in COVID times, the pandemic and the deadly virus hasn’t left the world but life is moving ahead thick and fast.
It was barely a few months back that the 13th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) ended and here we are at the start of the 14 th edition.
The season kicks off with a blockbuster game as Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians take on Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
MI haven’t won the first game of an IPL season since 2012.

Once again, Mumbai seem to have all bases covered and have added nice depth in the auctions. Their playing XI looks set and almost everybody picks themselves.
In the absence of Quinton de Kock, Chris Lynn will open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma. The latest India debutants Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are likely to slot in at 3 and 4 respectively with the Pandya brothers and Kieron Pollard completing the fiery middle-order.
Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult will be the premier pacers and Adam Milne might be the third pacer. Either of Rahul Chahar or Piyush Chawla might get the nod as the frontline spinner.
On the other hand, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) haven’t had the best of starts off the field with a few COVID positive cases. Time and again, there is just one question every season, will this be the year for RCB? Virat Kohli and his men have faltered at crunch situations multiple times.
RCB’s death bowling will be a big cause of concern once again. Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Siraj and Kyle Jamieson are likely to start as the first-choice pacers while Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar will be the premier spinners.
With Virat Kohli all set to open with Devdutt Padikkal and AB de Villiers and Glenn Maxwell in the middle-order, it gives the batting line-up some powerful shape.
Mohammed Azharuddeen or Rajat Patidar might be the other Indian batsman and may well slot in at 3 depending on where de Villiers and Maxwell bat. Dan Christian float around to add some much-needed experience in that lower middle-order.
MI haven’t won the first game of an IPL season since 2012. They have lost eight in a row while RCB turned things around last season in their first game. However, MI are well ahead on the head-to-head count as they lead this rivalry 17-10.

His availability might be slightly uncertain for the first game. Meanwhile, Daniel Sams is in isolation after he tested positive on the 7 th of April.
Adam Zampa who is due to get married hasn’t arrived yet and will miss the first game.
Predicted XI
Mumbai Indians: Chris Lynn, Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Piyush Chawla/Rahul Chahar, Adam Milne, Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah
Royal Challengers Bangalore: Devdutt Padikkal, Virat Kohli (c), Mohammed Azharuddeen/Rajat Patidar, Glenn Maxwell, AB de Villiers, Daniel Christian, Washington Sundar, Kyle Jamieson, Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal
Key players
Suryakumar Yadav : Ever since he moved to Mumbai Indians in 2018, Suryakumar Yadav has become a bank in the top-order. He usually bats at No. 3 and has amassed 400 runs or more in each of the last three seasons. In the last three years, Yadav has scored 1416 runs which is the fifth-most. Thus, he will be a vital cog in the MI line-up at No. 3.
AB de Villiers : AB de Villiers has been the engine room of the RCB middle-order for years now. He has been the star and has almost single-handedly carried the side on multiple occasions. Year after year, the South African superstar has churned out magical performances and much will depend on his form once again. De Villiers will be absolutely key in that RCB middle-order. Moreover, he has a fantastic record against MI – 726 runs at an average of 45.38 and a strike-rate of 146.08.
The Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore have a great reputation for classic matches.
