TOP MATCH TIPS
The two sides have been the most consistent in this edition of the Big Bash League, and while the Scorchers had a stretch of great wins at one point, enabling them to get to the qualifiers, the Sixers were a well-rounded machine with their impeccable batting line-up and weird mix of bowlers. Even when they copped a few losses, they came back to stay ahead of the pack. The Sixers’ consistency is reflected from the fact that they lost back to back games just once this entire season. Overall, the Sixers won nine out of the 14 games in the league stages while topping the league stages. They have been driven by some extraordinary individual performances from the top-order batsmen.
The Sixers had finished four points ahead of the Scorchers in the league phase and in the qualifier beat them comprehensively to get to the finals as the first team. They are in with a chance to make it back-to-back title wins.
The Scorchers, who made it to the finals the roundabout way, have been stellar in the competition and will still be seething from the loss to the Sixers in the qualifier despite putting up a good show with the bat.
Though, Perth Scorchers thrived on a late surge after an ordinary start to the season where they lost the first four games. But in a tremendous comeback of sorts, the Scorchers went on to win eight games out of their last 10 to qualify to the next stage. The turnaround was characterized by a series of games where they dominated opponents and won by a fairly big margin. The batting has looked ominous with Colin Munro, Jason Roy, Josh Inglis and Liam Livingstone alongside Mitchell Marsh and Ashton Turner. As ever, the bowling has been reliable except in the qualifier when they struggled against the Sixers.
The head to head record between these teams is slightly in favour of Perth Scorchers who have won 11 of the 19 games between these sides. However, in the last six games across two seasons of the Big Bash League, between these two sides, Sixers have won four games while losing just two. This includes wins in the league stages and the qualifier this season.
Team news: Sydney Sixers
Sydney Sixers are likely to name an unchanged 19-man squad and there are no injury worries in their camp. However, Mitchell Starc could be a late suspect entry in the line-up.
Team news: Perth Scorchers
Perth Scorchers will also likely name an unchanged XI for the finals, however, they could be looking at shuffling the batting order a bit to give Marsh and Turner more time in the middle.
Predicted XI
Sydney Sixers : Josh Philippe (wk), James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Daniel Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Steve O’Keefe, Jake Ball
Perth Scorchers : Jason Roy, Liam Livingstone, Colin Munro, Josh Inglis (wk), Mitchell Marsh, Ashton Turner (c), Aaron Hardie, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Fawad Ahmed
Key players
Josh Phillipe : Josh Philippe has had a stellar BBL season at the top of the order for the Sixers. He was announced as BBL’s player of the tournament and will be banking on a good showing in the finals after missing out on a half-century in the qualifier by five runs. The 23-year-old wicket-keeper batsman has amassed 499 runs and is striking at nearly 150 in this season. He has stood out with his partnerships with James Vince and it’s a combination the Scorchers will dread as they head into the finals. Philippe, in his limited appearances, has a good record in the playoffs. Last season, he had top-scored in the qualifier and the final, with a match-winning half-century in the final grabbing headlines.
Liam Livingstone: Less talked about in a star-studded line-up, the Englishman has had a terrific BBL season, racking up 381 runs while striking at 134.62. While not overly impressive with his performances, what Livingstone has done is step up when the chips are down in the camp, an underrated role. In his last few games, Livingstone has threatened to go big and in the Challenger knocked Brisbane Heat out with a Player of the Match performance. Earlier in the season, he had smashed a 38-ball 67 against the Sixers.
