Hobart Hurricanes have had a good run in this tournament so far. They have played eight games and have tasted victory five times. However, the problem has been that they have not really picked up pace and really dominated. Every time they start building some momentum, they suffer a setback. In their last game, they lost to Adelaide Strikers as they fell 10 runs short while chasing 184. Despite that, they are currently third on the points table with 18 points and a win in this game might see them move into the top two once again.
On the other hand, Sydney Thunder lost their first game but since then, they have been excellent. They won five games in a row and were looking almost unstoppable before Brisbane Heat halted their dream run. The Heat hunted down 175 with five balls and as many wickets to spare to hand Thunder their second defeat of the season. However, with 19 points from seven games, the Thunder are placed second and will be looking to make giant strides towards regaining the top spot.
This is the first time this season that these two sides are squaring off. As far as the head to head record goes, Hobart Hurricanes are in the lead with a record of 8-5. However, the rivalry has been almost neck and neck in the last three seasons.
Team news: Hobart Hurricanes
The Hobart Hurricanes have announced a 16-man squad to fly to Perth where they will face Sydney Thunder. Charlie Wakim has been dropped from the squad and he will stay back in Hobart to play the second XI fixture.
Team news: Sydney Thunder
Daniel Sams has been ruled out of this game due to concussion. He was struck on the head while facing Jack Wildermuth against the Brisbane Heat in Sydney Thunder’s last game. They have named an 18-man squad to take on the Hobart Hurricanes.
Predicted XI
Hobart Hurricanes : Ben McDermott (wk), D Arcy Short, Dawid Malan, Peter Handscomb (c), Colin Ingram, Tim David, Johan Botha, Nathan Ellis, Scott Boland, Riley Meredith, Sandeep Lamichhane
Sydney Thunder : Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson (c), Sam Billings (wk), Oliver Davies, Ben Cutting, Chris Green, Nathan McAndrew, Adam Milne, Tanveer Sangha, Chris Tremain
Key players
Ben McDermott : Ben McDermott has been in amazing touch with the bat. He is the leading run-scorer in this Big Bash season and has amassed 277 runs at an average of 55.40. He is batting at the top of the order and has been giving Hobart Hurricanes some solid starts. The Tasmania wicket-keeper batsman has already registered a couple of half-centuries and he has just one single-figure score in six innings. McDermott will once again be the key in the Hurricanes line-up.
Tanveer Sangha : Tanveer Sangha has been in superb form with the ball. The 19-year-old leg-spinner who is yet to feature in any other format is the joint second-highest wicket-taker of the season so far. He has picked up 13 wickets at an average of 13.61 and has an economy of 7.22. Moreover, he has a bowling strike-rate of 11.3. Sangha has gone wicketless only once in the seven games that he has played and he will be the one to watch out for once again.
