The defending champions, Sydney Sixers, have one of the strongest squads on paper for the 2020-21 edition of the Big Bash League.
The Sixers boast of some amazing quality in the line-up, especially on the bowling front, with the addition of Mitchell Starc after a long time, Jason Holder and Jackson Bird. They also have a decent group of spinners and a good variety of batsmen to handle the different phases.
The Hobart Hurricanes, on the other hand, come with a diverse squad that has some incredible six-hitters and some amazing batting talent. But the availability of some of their overseas recruits could be a problem as they look to make it to the play-offs. Hurricanes will be overly reliant on Peter Handscomb, D’Arcy Short and James Faulkner to make things happen for them.
Meanwhile, the head-to-head record suggests that despite the contrasting ways the teams line up this season, Hurricanes have the egde with a 6-5 record against Sixers . The last five games have also been in favour of the Hurricanes who have won four of the five matches.
Hobart Hurricanes: D’Arcy Short, Mac Wright, Will Jacks, Colin Ingram, Tim David, Ben McDermott, James Faulkner, Nathan Ellis, Riley Meredith, Scott Boland, Wil Parker
Sydney Sixers: Josh Philippe, Daniel Hughes, James Vince, Jordan Silk, Moises Henriques, Dan Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Ben Dwarshius, Lloyd Pope, Jackson Bird, Sean Abbott
James Vince will likely open the innings for the Sydney Sixers with Josh Philippe and Daniel Hughes the others in the top three of the batting line-up. Dan Christian, Jordan Silk and Carlos Brathwaite could also start and play in the middle-order. On the bowling front, Starc will be unavailable for a while as he is with the Australian Test squad. Ben Dwarshius and Sean Abbott could team up with Gurinder Sandhu and Lloyd Pope the leg-spinner in the bowling attack. Until Starc and Holder come in, the Sixers aren’t as strong with their playing XI as the squad suggests.
Hobart Hurricanes will have a strong batting core for the season, and it is here that they will look to try and exploit opposition sides. With the bowling lacking depth, the Hurricanes will be reliant on the batting group to fetch them wins. D’Arcy Short and Mac Wright could open the innings with Will Jacks from England, Colin Ingram and Tim David forming a new look middle-order. Their bowling stocks will be riding on the form of Scott Boland and Riley Meredith. Nathan Ellis will also be a key component of the bowling attack.
James Vince: The England top-order batsman is a fine T20 talent and has an array of strokes up his sleeve. Vince boasts of excellent flair at the top and is capable of being the aggressor in the powerplay overs. While he is slotted in at no.3, it is likely that the Sixers might ponder opening the batting with him to boost the scoring rate early on in an innings. Vince will handy on wickets with true bounce and could be the key player, like last year, in the batting line-up.
Colin Ingram : A middle-order batsman capable of playing the sheet anchor role or accelerating through the middle overs, Ingram is a terrific player of pace and spin and has evolved his batting in the middle overs to suit the requirements of franchises. One of the most valued T20 freelancers in the world right now, Ingram will add depth to the batting and ensure that the Hurricanes have someone to handle the middle and possibly even the death overs.
