It is the first game of the year 2021 as Melbourne Renegades square off Sydney Thunder in match number 22 of this 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
Sydney Thunder have ascended to the second spot on the points table. They suffered a 22-run loss to kickstart their BBL 10 campaign but since then, they have been simply superb. Callum Ferguson and his men have been consistent in all three departments and have been clinical more often than not. Their batting looks to be in good shape while the bowling is clicking well too.
On the other hand, Melbourne Renegades have had a complete opposite season thus far. They began with a thumping win over Perth Scorchers but ever since that win, their season has just been on the slide. The Aaron Finch-led side just don’t seem to know how to get past the finish line. They have now lost four games in a row and are reeling at the seventh spot on the points table.
However, they have a good head to head record against Sydney Thunder and are well ahead with nine wins from 12 matches. However, out of the three games that Sydney Thunder have won, two of them have been in the last couple of seasons. Earlier this year, Sydney Thunder absolutely thumped the Melbourne Renegades (by 129 runs).
Team news: Melbourne Renegades
Melbourne Renegades received a blow as South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir pulled out of this BBL season due to personal issues. However, Noor Ahmed will get a good run throughout this season in place of Tahir. The likes of Marcus Harris and James Pattinson continue to miss the BBL as they are a part of the Australian Test squad.
Team news: Sydney Thunder
Sam Billings was included in the squad and made his BBL debut in the game against Melbourne Stars. Adam Milne has been a part of the side for a few games now and that has rounded up Sydney Thunder’s squad. They are one of the few teams who are not really affected by the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy where teams have lost players to the Australian Test side.
Melbourne Renegades : Shaun Marsh, Aaron Finch (c), Sam Harper (wk), Rilee Rossouw, Mackenzie Harvey, Mohammad Nabi, Imad Wasim, Will Sutherland, Kane Richardson, Zak Evans, Peter Hatzoglou
Sydney Thunder : Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson (c), Oliver Davies, Sam Billings (wk), Ben Cutting, Daniel Sams, Chris Green, Adam Milne, Chris Tremain, Tanveer Sangha
Key players
Aaron Finch : Aaron Finch has looked in good touch throughout this tournament. The Melbourne Renegades skipper has amassed 106 runs in four innings but has a highest score of 39. It’s been a little uncharacteristic of Finch to not kick on and get big scores. Finch usually does so regularly and that has haunted the Melbourne Renegades. Their batting has looked iffy and apart from Shaun Marsh, there has been very little contribution from the others. Thus, his form at the top and his ability to convert the start into a big knock may well prove to be a decisive factor in the coming games.
Tanveer Sangha : Tanveer Sangha is bowling beautifully at the moment and has looked in fantastic form with the ball. The 19-year-old leg-spinner who made his T20 and BBL debut at the start of this season has been one of the reasons for Sydney Thunder’s success so far. He has picked up nine wickets at an economy of 6.20. Moreover, he averages 13.33 with the ball and is picking up a wicket once every two overs. Sangha’s returns this season read 2/26, 0/27, 1/36, 4/14 and 2/17 (latest). The young leg-spinner will definitely be the one to watch out for in this game.
