Finalists in the last two seasons, Melbourne Stars will be hoping to go one step ahead for the 2020/21 season with the addition of some extraordinary players in their ranks. The Stars are strong title contenders .
Their biggest conundrum will be fitting the best batsmen in right positions with an overdose of top four batters in their squad. Will Nicholas Pooran and Glenn Maxwell bat high enough to make an impact? Where will Ben Dunk bat? Does Nic Maddison play at no.3 or as finisher?
The Brisbane Heat, meanwhile, have added Morne Morkel as a local player but still have quite a few holes to plug in that line up of theirs. The Stars will be strong contenders to grab a win in this first fixture, but the Heat does have bowling quality to restrict some of the big hitters in the Stars line up.
Brisbane Heat has a decent top-order but has fallen short of expectations in recent times due to a lack of diversity and range in their line-up that sorely appears one-dimensional. They will need to play out of their skins to make it to the play-offs this time around.
Brisbane Heat: Chris Lynn, Max Bryant, Dan Lawrence, Jimmy Pierson, Tom Cooper, Jack Wildermuth, Lewis Gregory, Mitchell Swepson, Ben Laughlin, Morne Morkel, Mujeeb-ur-Rahman
Melbourne Stars: Marcus Stoinis, Andre Fletcher, Nic Maddison, Ben Dunk, Nicholas Pooran, Glenn Maxwell, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Billy Stanlake, Dilbar Hussain, Jackson Coleman
The Melbourne Stars one of the strongest batting teams in the league this season with Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis and the additional signing of Nicholas Pooran and Andre Fletcher.
They will likely start with Pooran and Fletcher with Zahir Khan or Dilbar Hussain as the third overseas player. The Stars will likely have Maddison at 3 and Pooran and Maxwell handling the death overs with Ben Dunk as anchor. Coleman and Nathan Coulter-Nile will be required to handle the powerplay overs.
Brisbane Heat has added Lewis Gregory and Dan Lawrence from England to enhance their all-round quality but still lack in a few key areas. They will open with Chris Lynn and Max Bryant and will likely have Mujeeb-ur-Rahman, the Afghanistan spinner, as their third overseas player with the league allowing as many as three from this season.
Lewis Gregory will be tasked with the death overs alongside Ben Laughlin. Swepson and Mujeeb will be the middle overs spinners while Morkel and Mujeeb will also handle the powerplay. In the batting department, Lawrence, who can also chip in with the ball, will be a handy addition to up the ante.
Marcus Stoinis : With his big-hitting range and recent form, Stoinis offers a dynamic proposition at the top of the batting order. The Australian all-rounder is also a good middle and death overs bowler with his variations including cutters and back of the hand slower balls.
Stoinis will be relied upon with the bat to provide quick starts, particularly with the batting depth that the Stars boast of.
Morne Morkel : While not the greatest T20 bowler around, Morne Morkel brings with him experience and an ability to hit the deck and generate bounce off a length.
On the hard Aussie wickets, Morkel will be quite a handful. Signed up as a local player, the South African with an Australian PR, will be a key bowler for Brisbane Heat, especially in the powerplay phase where his wicket-taking ability will be of use.
