This is the last and final game of the league stages in this 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL). Also, this will be the third game of the day and second successive one at the iconic Melbourne fun88in.in Ground as the Melbourne Stars go head to head against Sydney Sixers.
Melbourne Stars have blown hot and cold quite a bit this season. Every time it looks like they are building some nice momentum, they lose it and lose a few games on the bounce. That happened at the start of the season and again recently. Having lost their last two games, Melbourne Stars have jeopardized their qualification chances big time. The Glenn Maxwell-led side are currently seventh on the points table with 24 points (five wins, seven losses and nine Bash Boost points). They need to win this game and also the Bash Boost point. But they also need a few results to go their way. At least two out of the three teams above them (Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes and Brisbane Heat) to lose their final game and preferably not win the Bash Boost point as well.
Thus, Melbourne Stars face an uphill task as they face Sydney Sixers, a team against whom they have lost their last four games. Also, Sydney Sixers have been one of the best sides in this BBL 10. They may have lost their last two games but they were the first team to book a place in the Finals week. They are almost certain to finish in the top two. The Sixers will be looking to go into the knockouts with a win behind them.
Team news: Melbourne Stars
Andre Fletcher was injured ahead of the last game and he missed the game against Perth Scorchers. But that was his last game of the tournament and he has flown back. Thus, the squad is likely to remain unchanged.
Team news: Sydney Sixers
The inclusion of Sean Abbott and Moises Henriques since the Test series against India has been a big boost for the Sydney Sixers. They have fit in well. With this being the last game of the league stages and having qualified for the knockouts, Sydney Sixers might look to experiment a touch.
Predicted XI
Melbourne Stars : Marcus Stoinis, Seb Gotch (wk), Nick Larkin, Glenn Maxwell (c), Nic Maddinson, Hilton Cartwright, Clint Hinchliffe, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, Billy Stanlake, Zahir Khan
Sydney Sixers : Josh Philippe (wk), James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Daniel Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Ben Manenti, Jake Ball
Key players
Glenn Maxwell : Glenn Maxwell started this season with a bang but his form has tapered off in the last few games. He has registered 313 runs at a strike-rate of 140.35. However, in his last seven innings, the Melbourne Stars skipper has registered five single-digit scores, including three ducks. He is bowling well and is chipping in with wickets consistently and has picked up seven wickets. However, Melbourne Stars need the batsman, Glenn Maxwell to step up and he will be very important in this must win game.
Glenn Maxwell Top Melbourne Batsman – 3.60 at Betway
Josh Philippe : Josh Philippe may have had a couple of off games but he has been in top form this season. For the second successive season, Josh Philippe has topped the run charts for Sydney Sixers. This season, the wicket-keeper batsman has aggregated 453 runs at an average of 34.84 and has a strike-rate of 150.00. Philippe will continue to be a key player going forward for the Sydney Sixers.
Josh Philippe Top Sixers Batsman – 3.50 at Betway
