Match number 38 of this 10 th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) sees the Sydney derby at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. This game was originally supposed to be played at the Sydney Showground Stadium but with the spike in COVID-19 cases in Sydney, the game has been moved.
As far as the form of these two teams is concerned, both teams Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers have a similar win-loss record and these two teams are sitting pretty at the top of the points table. Both teams have won six games and lost three. However, the Sixers are the ones who are at the top with 25 points (seven Bash Boost points) while the Thunder have 23 points (five Bash Boost points).
Coming into this game on the back of a loss against Perth Scorchers, the Thunder failed to chase down 186 and it was their third loss of the season. In fact, this loss pushed them down to the second spot on the points table. However, they have been in good form throughout the tournament. The Callum Ferguson-led were once on a five-match winning streak as well. Thus, they will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers have been slightly inconsistent in the last few games after a solid start. However, the defending champions are well on their way to booking a spot for the knockouts. They had a thrilling win against the Brisbane Heat in their last game which took them to the top of the points table.
In the last five matches its been 2 each and tie (sixes won the one over eliminator)

As far as the head to head record is concerned, Sydney Sixers are well ahead with 11 wins to Sydney Thunder’s six. This is the first time that these two teams will square off this season.
Team news: Sydney Thunder
Daniel Sams was diagnosed with concussion in the game against Brisbane Heat and has been unavailable for a couple of games now. However, he may miss another game or two as the Thunder will not want to rush their premier all-rounder back into the scheme of things as they are in a good position. Meanwhile, the rest of the squad is likely to remain the same and despite the loss, Callum Ferguson and co are might not tinker a lot with the squad.
Team news: Sydney Sixers
Ben Dwarshuis is recovering from a minor groin strain and he missed the last couple of games. However, he might return to the playing XI for the game against the Thunder. The rest of the squad is more or less going to remain the same.
Predicted XI
Sydney Thunder : Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson (c), Sam Billings (wk), Alex Ross, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green, Adam Milne, Brendan Doggett, Tanveer Sangha
Sydney Sixers : Josh Philippe (wk), Jack Edwards, James Vince, Daniel Hughes (c), Jordan Silk, Daniel Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Steve O’Keefe, Jackson Bird, Jake Ball, Lloyd Pope
Key players
Alex Hales : It’s been a peculiar BBL season so far for Alex Hales. He seems to be striking the ball beautifully but he just hasn’t been able to convert the starts into big and substantial scores. Hales has amassed 269 runs in nine innings and is striking at 161.07 but he has just one 50+ score in this tournament. There was a point when Hales went past 30 five times in a row but just couldn’t go past the fifty-run mark. Sydney Thunder will once again be the key player for the Sydney Thunder and a big knock might just propel them to the top of the points table.
Josh Phillipe : Josh Phillipe has had a couple of successive failures. However, like Alex Hales, even Phillipe hasn’t been able to get those big scores. Barring that 95 he scored against the Melbourne Renegades, he has not crossed the 50-run mark in the other eight innings. But he has been a key part of the Sydney Sixers batting line-up. The Sixers wicket-keeper batsman has given his side some solid starts at the top and he has aggregated 273 runs while striking at 140.00.
